Broken pipe in the engine
Hi all,
We've just got home after a 300 mile trip to visit my parents. I usually open the bonnet on my 2003 V40 to help cool the engine down (just habit) and I discovered this metallic pipe that's split in half... Can anyone please tell me what this is and what it does and if it's a serious break? I'll contact the garage tomorrow so need to know what to tell them Anyone know how much this is likely to fix? Thanks |

I suppose you might call it an air preheater hose. It allows the engine to draw warmed air from around the exhaust manifold rather than cold air strraight from outside. I think it's intended to help with running in cold weather before the engine has fully warmed up by aiding fuel vapourization. It's not critical and should be an easy fix. You could probably do it yourself if you can get a length of suitable pipe.
Hope this helps Martin |

Thanks Martin - I appreciate the fast reply... Where can I find a suitable hose and what hose should I be looking for?
I know nothing about cars I'm afraid... but wouldn't mind tackling it myself... got another 300 mile round trip this coming weekend so need the car fixed by then... |

You'll be able to make your trip without it, so don't panic.

Halfords sell pipe like that so presumably other motor factors will also sell it.What you'd need to know is diameter and length required. If unsure what to ask for then either show the sales assistant the car or take a piece of the pipe into the shop to show them.

You'll certainly be able to make your trip. If you can't find a suitable replacement before you go, aluminium tape will make a good repair, or just take the broken pieces off altogether.

To be honest, as long as you're not driving in Swedish climates, you could just throw it away. Not saying you should, but mine disintegrated five years ago and never had a single issue. That's how un-critical it is.
The idea is to stop the throttle body icing up in extremely cold weather, like carburettors used to do back in the day.
