Concern with Eco+
Slowly pulled onto the drive today and whilst making the last adjustment to position but going slowly, the engine stop/start kicked in and turned off. Still travelling at walking speed, I was left without power steering. A bit disconcerting but not a major issue.
By coincidence, I was researching what Eco+ does tonight and it seems that in Eco+ mode, the stop/start will kick in below 4mph. This could be deemed a touch dangerous if I'm right? Any others found the same? Serves me right for trying to save trees...Sport mode only from now on. D4, geartronic se lux by the way. Oh, and I was given some Autosmart wax the other day. I'm not a detailing nut, but it seems like the dogs danglies to me. |

You are spot on, i noticed this straight away, put me off using the Eco button initially but I'm now used to pressing it when parking up so that you don't loose power steering.

EC0+ caught me out too a few times too.
Bit hairy once when crossing from middle lane of a busy road and it cut out just as I was about to turn. OK started up immediately but loss of steering and power just at the time it was needed was a little disconcerting. This will happen though as the ECO setting is designed to cut out before the car stops.

I'm not a fan of start-stop - switching a turbocharged hot engine off just seems the wrong thing to do !
Or does the oil pump keep running ? Can you switch off stop-start permanently ? |

Thanks for confirming I've not completely lost my marbles. As said, I'm not too bothered about it now I know it does it but was a shock as the wheelie bin was in the firing line.
Re stop/start and turbos, I put my faith in the designers and testing program that this has been considered and technology has moved on. There is a button for stop/start but not sure if it resets when you turn the car off. |

I believe that pretty much all modern turbo cars keep the oil pump running for a short time after switching off to help prevent turbo failure.

I thought they'd switched to water cooling of a turbo a long time ago because of the oil glazing onto the bearings.
I'm surprised at the power steering not being electrically assisted to prevent such a loading on the rack when the engine cuts out.
