Has anyone used this or a similar device - does it work they are claim a 15% increase in fuel economy, which would be great if it is true.

i used one many years ago.i dont know if it improved mpg but it has to be more aerodynamic.a mate of mine had one on his car and whilst driving along the motorway it slipped round the opposite way and he felt it immediatley.he said it was like the brakes comeing on so if i was a betting man i would say they must make some difference.

Hi Big Al All I can say is yes they do work but only with unique circumstances,To start with you will need an estate car like a 240,740 or a 940(other lesser makes are available)This will allow you to set the windslammer as in my case to be fitted as far back as possible,So far back that I open the rear door and have it just a few millimetres away from the paintwork.

Next you will need an old style caravan that wieghs twice as much as a modern one with hardly any slope at the front,In fact the flatter the better.

Also just to feel the real affects make sure you choose a 2.0l auto as in my case.

Now as you can tell I have experienced using a windslammer and first started using one on my first 240 estate which was a 1984 2.0l manual five speed,I also had a fiftheen foot Baily Maestro it had a solid metal chassis and glass windows and wooden furnishings.Then we had a fiftheen foot Elddis tornado with a square front also.

Now I don't know what it weighed but it took four adults just to move it about and thats was hard work.
My tired old volvo used to start struggling at thirty miles an hour and you could feel it holding you back even down hills.Kinda like deploying a parachute.

To start with I put the slammer in line with back of the rear doors went off down the road and it was worse than before!!

Not one to give up I researched it and found some french guys trying to reinvent them after extensive wind tunnel tests.They found that the best option was in fact to fit the slammer onto a pole and attatch that to the "A" frame of the caravan,This not only pushed the wind over but put nose weight onto the van which helped stability.Also for it to be effective it had to be mounted quite close to the van.

They found that fitting one to the roof of a saloon car meant it was so far from the van that as in fact causing turbulence similare to your top picture and lifted the van thus reducing the nose weight.

I contiued using my slammer until We bought our new STREAMLINED van and can honestly say it really really made a huge difference.

Brian, Thanks for the reply, I have an XC90 and a 2008 Abbey freestyle so I guess that it wouldn't be worth me using one as the front of the caravan is streamlined anyway. This is supported by a number of caravaning forums as well.
