As the title says really! I havent seen anyone with a fault on here, So maybe im the lucky one to have it 1st?? it sounds like the gearbox is grumbling at certain revs with 1st and 2nd been the most noticeable "maybe due to road noise in the highter gears" with it sounding a bit like the old Mk1/2 escort exhaust rasp at higher revs, It isnt the exhaust thought.
If im static and rev the engine its sweet if its in neutral or foot on the clutch, so im sure its not the DMF/clutch.
The odd thing is that it doeasnt do it until its warmed up and when slow speed steering it goes away somtimes, hence thinking its the gearbox/diff!!

any ideas as to the labour in hours to change one??

its a 2008 D5 Lux with 105k on the clock.

Have you checked oil level there is a level plug on the side. Will probs be worth changing the gear oil to before looking at the more expensive box replacement. But your right I don't think I've read a thread about any of the 5 or 6 speed manual boxes giving trouble. My s60 has 140,000 on and still shifts perfectly and still has the factory oil in. I was thinking of changing it next service but also tempted to leave it

I don't think it will be the box with your mileage

Sorry about the slow reply, I have got some gear oil conditioner that I had thought of adding 1st, mine shifts fine as well but is just noisy, sounds like a bearing, its got to be something internal as it does it at the same revs!!
I really hate cars these days

If your oil has been escaping out of the driveshaft seals then it would suffer a beariing fail. Have you actually checked the oil level?

If it's needing out i would imagine a garage would need at least 5 hours, maybe more... a clutch centre place may be a lot quicker!

Someone on this forum got a 'mates rate' of £250 to do one at a clutch centre.

I haven't checked the level as such but there are no leaks or any staining suggesting an old leak, its bone dry in that area, think i may have to bite the bullet and get it looked at.

Diagnosis is needed, maybe it is DMF, either way it sounds expensive, just don't drive through any flooded area to get to a cash-point, you may have to spend 10 minutes on the phone with your insurers, perish the thought, you won't get that time back!..
