why do you need to monitor if every thing is running well? the onboard diagnostics on the car will let you know when there is a problem just drive and watch out for messages on the dash

What happens to the contents of the dpf (soot?) during and after regen? If it works fine in urban traffic, as mine did yesterday , in traffic in Grenoble, with 39deg temps, and ac on. I thought where does it go, if urban environment then hardly likely to get blown out, and easy eco driving with no ‘hoofing it’ ? Should it be hoofed after regen?

Quite simply - it remains in the exhaust until you hoof it, but it's now ash, and gets chucked out the back of the car with the diesel soot! I'm surprised that my euro 4 XC has a significant amount of soot in the poo chute as compared to my merc engined previous driver. The exhaust never got dirty on that.

Being in Sweden, and quite rural, I've never ever had any issue with the DPF. I've noticed it takes roughly 30 km for a full regeneration in country road driving conditions.
For cars without start/stop, the easiest way to see if it's active is that the consumption doesn't go down to zero when coasting.
