Default Heater hose

Need some advice/information. I have a 2008 V70 2.5 petrol R Type estate. Last week following some errr.. spirited acceleration in order to pass another car I lost all my coolant with clouds of steam billowing out behind me. I thought I must have blown a radiator hose or water pump gasket.
However when refilling the header tank coolant poured out from the righthand side of the engine above the gearbox.
Transpired it was a popped heater hose union where it connects to a dual bulkhead union. It is the hose that also connects to the engine block.
After much swearing and grazed knuckles managed to get the hose and union out and was surprised to see that it just a push fit at the bulkhead end and that it is made of plastic.
I have reconnected the hose by heating the female end in boiling water and pushing it back onto the male connector.
My questions are; why did it pop when I revved/accelerated hard in the first
place?
Is my repair sufficient or should I purchase a new hose?
