Default V40 Exhaust

Hi,
I have a very old V40 and the joint in the exhaust between the rear section and mid sections has failed and is blowing. Having examined it the reason for the failure is that the clamp holding the two parts together has rusted away, but the exhaust itself is still fine.

I would like to replace the clamp, but I realise that the two halves of the clamp are put onto each section of the exhaust during manufacture and flanges etc. are formed afterwards meaning that the clamp can not be removed or replaced without cutting.

I haven't yet cut the remainder of the clamp off, since I have to use the car. But I would like to design and have made a replacement clamp that I can fit when I cut the old one off. My problem is that the clamp is so badly rusted that I cannot see exactly how it works and the shape of the ends of each exhaust section. Does anyone have any pictures of what this should like or an exploded diagram or something. I have the Haynes manual and no details are shown. Has anyone else overcome this problem?

Thanks,
Ian

I know it's not very clear but this is what VADIS is showing on the system.

Hope this helps some...

Your friendly local exhaust place should have a sleeve they could fit over the pipes after cutting off the flanges , shouldnt cost a lot , a lot less than new silencer and pipes .

Thanks for the help. Thanks for the pictures from Baffler very useful. I think I will go with Clan's suggestion and buy a sleeve and cut off the flanges.
Thanks again.

Does anyone know if part number 173 in the above pic is sold on its own?
mines rusted solid and needs to be tightened as the exhaust is leaking on start up for a min or so then it stops, the current clamp has had it so I was going to chop it off and fit a U clamp but if the correct part is available then that would be preferred.

Hi Mate

yes number 173 the Exhaust Clamp is available on its own, part number 3923345 (assuming this is for the same car as the OP, a 2.0 petrol S/V40 1997 - if not please pm me or email me the registration number of the car to identify correct part number)

This clamp retails at £4.31 inc vat at any volvo dealer. i can do it for less, but by the time we add on postage then price works out the same pretty much.

HTH

Simon
