Default Top mount assembly, and renewal

Hi all

Just been trouble shooting a problem with my front suspension topmount. A clanging/twanging of the spring when turning at slow speeds.

I clamped the spring down to relieve pressure on the top mount and the rubber seat and metal ring dropped down with the spring.

I can put my finger on top of the metal spring and feel ball bearings floating about loose and free. Assume this isn't right!

Which bit needs replacing? Anyone got a good exploded diagram of it all?

Cheers

I've never heard of the bearing breaking up but it sounds like yours has. I don't have a diagram handy but basically, the spring loads the upper mount bearing (via the rubber bump stop) and, if it is failing, will cause the effect you're getting. You need to extract the leg from under the wing and replace the bearing. This can be done on the car. You need good spring compressors and may want to change the shock(s) at the same time. Not too bad to do. Regards.

Yes it has broken up, see pic! I'm looking for the correct part to replace and struggling though - is it just the bearing I need which is pressed in to the top and bottom metal parts?

Karlos, the eBay/PartsForVolvos topmounts do not include the bearings so they're no good. If you remove the topmount, you can take out the bearing which seems to be pressed in to the bottom metal plate (right of pic). I've ordered two new SKF bearings from EuroCarParts, part no. 669880020 @ £15 each to replace it.

I changed mine a while back but can't remember the detail of the parts i.e. what was pressed into what. HOWEVER, I made the mistake of using Scan-tech which are poor quality and didn't work properly. So I ended up re-greasing the old bearings and putting them back in (they were still usable). SKF should be fine though. Regards.

TBF when I say press fit I think its just lightly pushed in to the metal, its plastic after all.

Cheers for the info Bill, don't think mine are still usable! Hopefully SKF ones will be good.

OEM quality I would think. SKF gave birth to Volvo.

Yes I also had to change the top plate as the bush had popped out. ECP needed 2 goes at getting me good parts. One of them didn't have the bearing and one of them the bush was poorly attached. Have lasted ok for least few years but havn't hammered them, I am using sport Bilsteins.
