Smoke test in a few hours... Also going to double check the O2 and MAF sensors while we're at it.

Read the codes too, just the part load fuel trims code.

Weird, ill try and fix it later. But I think we have found the problem. Despite the maf voltage changing in proportion to throttle input leading me to think its OK, the voltages seem to be way out and its a chinesium one. So I've bought a replacement.

Car also drives fine with the maf unplugged. Just a little underpowered as its in its default values "safe tune" but it's smooth and pulls well.

Smoke test turned up nothing.

Yep, these engines are quite picky about MAF quality, a cheap aftermarket one will almost certainly cause problems, so you're doing the right thing - get the proper Bosch one in there, and even if you still have problems at least this can be ruled out, although as you say it will probably fix it.

I sorted this one in the end, I think it was the MAF, but I also replaced the thermostat, ECT sensor, the whole ignition system, and loads more.

Unrelated note, is there anywhere to list cars for sale on here?

Probably the MAF, as mentioned above.

Yes, in the "Sales" section at the top of the forum.
