That's probably a good way to think of it. It's debatable whether a true all-season tyre exists; it will always be a compromise. In winter it'll be better than a summer tyre but not as good as a true winter tyre whilst in summer it won't be as good as a 'real' summer tyre.

Afaik, the only all-season tyre that has achieved a snowflake is the Michelin Cross-Climate.

My 18" R-Design wheels are being treated to a new set of Michelin Cross Climate tyres tomorrow, as the rear factory fit Pirelli P Zero Rosso still have about 40% tread left on them the Michelins should last the remaining lifetime of the car!

Hope they live up to their reputation as at £168 a shot they are a fair investment, mind you my Volvo dealer quoted me £210 each for standard summer Michelins, ATS were offering them for about £12 per tyre less, but I would rather trust my local independent with my unmarked rims.

Have a set of Michelin Crossclimate on my V70 P2. Very pleased with them - nice and quiet and comfortable ride. 225/50/R17 . Purchased from Costco last month at 133 a corner plus a £50 rebate. As previously mentioned they are meant to be very good - so we shall see how they last.

Any all seasons would come in mediocre to bad when put up against a selection dedicated summer or winter tyres for their particular purpose. You are also really limited for choice so will have to compromise a lot more on noise and comfort.

If you would be happy with budget bottom of all tests tyres on both winter and summer tyre tests then it makes sense to go for really good quality premium all season as that's what you will get but you will save the hassle of swapping and storing. Be under no illusion as to their performance relative to dedicated season tyres.

My factory conti's lasted about 20k miles on my 2016 XC90 with the 20" wheels, have switched to Avon ZX7 - quieter than the contis and haven't noticed any other difference - came in at a much more reasonable £120 per wheel at local place, very happy so far

Interesting article thanks. It has reminded me that I need to be quicker with getting the winters off in springtime on the V60. It was mid May before they came off this year.....

Just done 25k miles on my orignal Pirelli 275/40/R21 tyres...
I still have tread on them and they look good for at least another 6k before needing changing...but...I am now really starting to feel and hear different road surfaces through my wheel, a vibration through the steering wheel and below your feet is now becoming evident dependant on road surface.

I am in two minds to either get the vibration checked out by volvo in case the air suspension or a wheel bearing is at fault or get a fresh set of tyres to see if it cures it & also be ready for winter and keep the best of the orignal set as a spare maybe...I would prefer to enter winter with new tryres than tyres with 25k wear on them!
I dropped into a kwik fit the other day to get them checked and they said they were good for many months yet, but I wonder if they are causing me to feel more through the steering due to them running low on rubber now.
