I guess there's always a fine line between 'it is covered' and 'well Sir, I'm afraid for this age and mileage it's considered fair wear and tear'.

Misleading Volvo Warranty Booklet?
After 2 EGR replacements in the first 3 years on my V60/D4 I took up the Volvo "Extended Warranty". That in itself is mis-leading as it is surely only an extension if terms remain the same? The second EGR replacement was the "modified and new permanent fix" as described in a 2016 Volvo email.
The "extended" warranty booklet sent to purchasers lists 3 page numbers as containing "significant exclusions". On a page not listed and headed "The right equipment" a list of items not covered is hidden. For reasons of "clarity" according to an email from Customer Services. Hmmmm...As well as various items additional to the 3 year warranty the whole exhaust system is listed as per the original warranty - the sole exception being catalytic converters. On querying with Volvo they say my EGR is covered - although their "hidden" wording excludes it surely? How many hundreds or thousands of D4 drivers still have an original or replacement "non permanent" IE failing EGR which should clearly be a named exception in new car and "extended" warranties.. I refused the offer of a refund and have sought a Trading Standards ruling on Volvo's "extended warranty". |

Doing some digging....I think Warranty Direct may get my business with their "LuxuryCare" package with main dealer labour rates (up to £240ph - think ours charge around £100) They confirmed they cover the high-tech pieces like adaptive cruise....although not any main headlight pieces other than levelling system. "Infotainment" was £50 extra, but they could do 2 years for £769 and 3 for £1065 - bit closer to what I would expect. Maybe they will go down a bit further with some haggling, but that is already a little lower than their {"list" price - 10% Aug offer}, so perhaps not too bad? Of course I may well change cars within the next couple of years....if there have been no claims they will refund pro-rata IF there have been no claims (less a £50 admin fee), which seems fair. Plus I can pay over 4 quarterly instalments of the first year (no interest charge). Welcome any other thoughts - experiences I read of WD online look pretty reasonable overall. Of course you never really know until you have to make a claim, & of course you hope to never make a claim, but around £1 per day sounds fair for a bit of peace of mind.

I was not offered the Volvo extension at the end of the 3 year warranty even though the dealer did do an end of 3 year warranty check, when I started to feel a bit uncomfortable with the amount of potential cost I was facing I decided to go Warranty Direct. I cannot absolutely say why though. Perhaps being a sucker for the way they do their business.

FYI (in case it helps others!), WD went down a little more on their price, but then refused to budge another £15 (which for me would have made a nice round number!).
So I decided to mull things over a bit more....and had a little online chat with MotorEasy. Their cover looks pretty similar - they are 'discretionary', which sounded a concern to me, but 2 months ago they joined up with the Motor Ombudsman, so there is a bit of safety there. They suggested the 'discretionary' should be an advantage - if a part sounds like it is on the way out, could be fixed for 100's, but if left could cost 1,000s, they can decide to pay for it to be fixed. The fact there is an ombudsman to go to in the worst case was reassuring enough to me. They include "infotainment" as standard (WD didn't - charge an extra £50 - which struck me as odd since they are now an intrinsic part of every car!), AND immediately offered the price for 2 year cover I was willing to pay with WD...& that is before I call them later for a final haggle. <edit> - they called me back, dropped a bit more on price (to an even smaller "round number" than I was trying to get WD down to!) & I've gone with them for 2 years of cover.....takes the pressure off worrying whether to change my car for a bit longer! As with ALL 'insurance' cover (even though technically ME is not insurance!), I suspect I'll never know whether it is worth it unless and until the time passes or I have to claim, & frankly I hope it would be around £30pcm 'wasted' in the end....but with all the tech in our motor, I feel I ought to cover it!

I had WD on my Mercedes. Every year they paid out no problems. Every year I was claiming for more than I paid in premium.
I therefore went with them on my Volvo.

Just had a letter through the post offering Volvo Extensive Protection for 4th year/60,000 miles at £395 for the XC60 with all the recovery, replacement, overnight hotel, emergency travel, continental, etc.
I shall ring them later and ask for the price on a two year deal.

Hopefully similar or better than this.
I was advised at 3 years to go for just one year extention initially to keep the vehicle under 5yrs/60k miles, at which point to then extend for the full 3 years. this would ensure the cover is on Plan A, which covers more stuff than a PLan B warranty for cars over 5yr/60,000 miles. Will depend how many miles you have done and expect to do of course but hope this helps, Note sightly higher prices for AWD vehicles |
