Default Fitting a 531 head?

Hi folks,

Just wondering if anybody knows what is involved in fitting a 531 head to my 92' 240 with a b230f.

The free'er flowing 531 head is from a 940 so has a head mounted dizzy.
I'm told however its just a case of bolting it onto the b230f block, using the 240 cam cover to blank the dizzy.

It would be using a vx3 cam the 531 came with so shouldn't need shimming i guess.

Anything else I've missed?

FB and FX engines (also fitted to 240) had the 531. FB mostly in 940 and FX I only saw in the Swiss Volvo 240.

So yes can easily be done. Expect re-shimming though if you fit another cam.

In the rear you need to close the hole left by the distributor simply by means of a plug readily available with the spares suppliers.

Good luck.

If the 531 originally came from a B230ET engine there will be an extra sensor hole in the rear of the head adjacent to cylinder 4. It's for the ET's thermal time switch. Either leave the unused sensor blocking the hole or blank it off (M14).

A lot of work for 10-15bhp.

Thanks for the replies folks. Sounds easy enough. Just not sure which 'blanking plate' I need to block off the old head, dizzy hole.

Yeah T5Sweep, I guess it it - but the car is my only one and a daily driver. So as much as I'd lover to turbo the car, bolting on a head and cam in a day is a much more manageable prospect of going from 115hp - 135+hp mated to a 2.25 exhaust I've got.

The blanking plug is rubber coated plug that fits in the back of the head where the distributor would go on the 940. Your 240 B230F engine will be fitted with one. I'm not sure if it is possible to remove and reuse it.

It's available from Volvo still. It should be obvious from the parts diagram if you go and ask at the counter.

Is the vx3 cam in the head already? If it isn't and you are fitting it then it will need shimming.

66 Lover - please let us know how you get on fitting the head/camshaft.

My 240 is my daily driver too and like you, I'd like a little more life out it too - 2.25 SS exhaust and an electric cooling fan (and very recently a new throttle switch) mean that on a long journey I'm driving quietly and getting an average of about 35-6 MPG which is pretty respectable. I think that the 531/VX combo might just improve things a bit further... keep us all posted will you?

Good luck, Nick
