V60 d4 or d5
I'm on the verge of purchasing a v60 on a 13 plate. 50k or so and in SE Lux Nav trim. It's the D5 engine which looking at the stats goes like a train and gives around 45 to the gallon.
However I then start looking at a D4 r design and that is quoting about the same 7.3 to 60 but this time with 60 MPG. Is the D4 the better engine then? Or is the SE loaded up with heavy kit or something? Car I'm looking at is 13k which seems reasonable value to me. Any opinions? Apologies if this has been covered before!! |

I can't comment on the D5 but I have the D4 R Design MY15 and I average 49-50 mpg if I drive carefully, 44 mpg on higher speed long runs. Don't know how manufacturers come up with consumption figures, never seen 60 mpg ever, however the road tax on mine is only £30 so worth factoring it in.
If you feel you need the D5 performance without the lower fuel consumption you could consider doing the Polestar upgrade for an extra £800. Claims to take the existing 181 bhp to 215 bhp, without voiding the warranty. More details here http://www.sentinelcars.co.uk/access...olvo-polestar/ |

You will need to find out whether its the 4 or 5 cylinder D4, the 5 is just a lower tune version of the D5, the D4 is a newer more efficient unit, but at your model year its hard to tell as the new D4 (VEA) was just being phased in.

Ok that all makes sense.
I think I'm plumping now for a 2011 d5 r design. This one has polesyar tuning but just to 215 bhp. My other option is to pay 3k more for a 2014 d4 with the better economy and lower tax. |

My only worry about the 2011 one is that there is no 215hp polestar software for that year on a D5, id double check to make sure its legit, probably just a typo mind. |

Here is the guide to model years. It is for the XC60 but I'm sure the codes apply also to the V60.
MY14 saw the facelift with production starting week 20 (AT 1320). MY14.5 saw the introduction of the D4 VEA engine with production starting week 46 (AT 1346).

You don't say what the relative mileages are on each car but £3000 for a newer, updated car sounds good economy. The D5 is possibly a heavier engine and I don't know if you'll notice/need the extra 25 bhp, but you will notice the lower mpg. If you do need more grunt buy the Polestar upgrade later.
You might want to test drive both cars as the R Design I have has a firm ride compared to the SE. Good luck. Last edited by Dtmorgan; Aug 20th, 2017 at 18:09. Reason: Addition |

It's a real conundrum! I'm struggling to make sense of the polestar sticker on the back! It seems to have the same 215 bhp as all the cars. No evidence anywhere of 2011 cars having this upgrade. To be honest I'd rather it didn't as I suspect the term would push the insurance higher.
I'm taking it on finance so it's all about whether the extra 3k is worth the additional monthly payment. Yes I'll save in economy and car tax but it will come at the price of additional interest. They're both r design models. Have decided on that model rather than the SE. I like my sporty looks too much! |

Have you tried the new D4 8 speed Auto, its a gem. Had it on a loan car whilst mine was serviced, boy does it go, and really smooth. Not sure when it was introduced on the V60 but guessing around the same time as the XC60.
