Default Whining power steering

I have 2008 v70 with 79k on the clock. It’s well maintained with full service history. Recently I’ve noticed that there is a whining noise which gets louder if I turn the steering. The fluid is at the max level and there are no leaks.. Is there anything that I can check before going to the expense of replacing the PS pump? Someone suggested changing the PS oil might help but is there anything else I can check or do?

The max level should be when hot, minimum should be when its cold, other than that, I don't know, I had whining but only because I am losing fluid and it was empty, not much help, prob is the pump, or worse....

You can see if there are small bubbles in the fluid. Systems can suck air in.
Remove and refresh the fluid.

As above, with engine on undo the cap look with a flash light for slight foaming. May want to tighten the clamps at the reservoir and/or pump
While there, a 08 V70 would be platform P3 https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=112

If it is not then try changing that first as it's very cheap and easy to do.
