Read the code which was 074 I think, can't remember for sure but it was crankshaft sensor again. When I serviced my car last week I asked simon at MRG Volvo about the sensor issue. He told me that volvo sells a shield for the crankshaft sensor because volvo found out that on some of the cars the cam and crankshaft sensors signals would interfere with each other.

So he said the shield was about £40 and that should sort the problem, I've not bought one as of yet.
Mine is a T4 2001 so I've got a spare crankshaft sensor(volvo) and if you want to try it to see if it sorts it let me know and I'll send it to you
Then just send it back. Atleast that way you wouldn't have to buy one

Danny, I think you might be close with that. When I have managed to have the EML read it came back as RPM sensor. The garage initially suggested the cam sensor as it probably wouldn't run with a malfunctioning crank sensor, so the cam sensor was duly changed with a new one from rufe. It then happend again and the EML was read and cam back as RPM sensor again, so this time I fitted a brand new crank sensor bought from Rufe. I havent managed to get the EML read the last couple of times as it either dissapeared on the next start up or the garage wasn't open but I would imagine it would say RPM sensor again.

Is there any chance you can contact Simon at MRG and ask him the part number for that shield pls?

Thanx
Simon

Hi Liam, willing to give it a try. Will have to find the sensor first unless you have any pointers.

Undo the vacuum hose and see if there's any fuel in there. If yes, replace the regulator.
Done the FPR, along with ECT sensor, HT leads and coils, thermostat, new spark plugs and a new lambda sensor. Also trialled a different MAF with no change.

With the vast amount of things that has been changed and checked I get the feeling this may be an electrical problem, probably a simple one at that. It seems that some connection somewhere is contracting away from making contact when cold.

Think I would try and unplug and re-plug every electrical connector and connection in and around the engine bay and make sure you give all other wires a wiggle too. This would include wires to all the sensors (unlug and re-plug) or wiggle as necessary, wiggle and check wires to maf, fuse boxes, and especially spark plugs, coils and the fuel pump.

Clutching at straws I know but it really does seem that almost everything else has either been done or changed.

Hope you get it sorted, it's been a right PITA.

Hmm, I am leading to think it might be an electrical problem, possibly a break in the wiring somewhere. Will try and check all the wires as I can, especially on the sensors I've changed.

Thanx

It's located on the underside of the throttle body. You should be able to check with a torch and a small mirror. The two screws holding it should have tamper proof blue/white marker paint applied over their heads and if this is disturbed you could be onto something. Give it a wiggle to see if there's any movement in it.

Intresting Devolpment.

Last week I had to go and pick my sister up from the Ferry Terminal at Liverpool. I fuelled up with Tesco Momentum before setting off and it was then only a short 40mph dual carriage way drive to the A627M and then the M62. It was a warm day so I had the A/C switched on and the climate control set to 20 degrees. I was in no rush and was doing generally between 60-65mph on the way there (M62, M60 and M62 again) Amazingly I peaked at an incredible 41.7mpg average on my info centre. When the M62 ended in Liverpool I still had 41.4mpg average showing after 40 miles of motoring.

Not the 43.5mpg I should be getting but it's not far off.

Firstly, apologies to Danny.

After him taking the time to find out the part number for the shield I never ordered one. This has now been rectified as I have 1 on order from Rufe. Now that winter is approaching there will be a proper test to see it has any effect on the car starting during the cold weather.
