Default 2016 XC90 T8 - ICE Constantly Running

Hi,

I am interested to know if anyone has come across this issue, where regardless of the driving mode selected, the compustion engine is constantly running. It happens when the battery is fully charged. It does use the battery for take off etc. However, the mpg is badly impacted as you would expect.

I plan on bringing to a Volvo dealer soon, but it would be great to have some background knowledge on what might be the cause... software or sensors etc.

Thanks is advance.

For how long? Mine will insist on running for up to 2 minutes sometimes irrespective of drive mode, I assume to do with getting up to temperature etc... However you say it is using battery to pull away, so the engine is obviously off if that is happening? So not constantly running?

The ICE remains on the entire time even at standstill, until we switch off the car. We can see the battery is being used by the performance graph and by the power at take off.

Not sure then. It is almost like it is behaving as if permanently in Power mode. As you say I think it is a trip to the dealer. Never heard of that before.

How does your 12v battery look? The alternator might be being called upon if the hybrid battery isn't able to top up the 12v when in electric only mode.

How has your XC90 t8 been otherwise over the years? Reliable? What's your milage? Just curious 😉

12v battery is fine. We have bought the car recently, so don't know too much about the history. It had a battery replaced a few months back. Its has 150k miles and otherwise running very well.

If the ICE is permanently running then the car is essentially faulty. It will make it extremely thirsty and costly to run.

If you bought it retail then I would get it back to the selling dealer pronto.

If you bought it at auction or from a private seller then I would get it to you local Volvo dealer for diagnostic and cross your fingers. It could be simple or it could be ruinously expensive.

Over the last 6 years of the SPA cars I have never heard of this fault before.

You should check if the auxiliary petrol heater is working. Try to precondition the car with the app or via the console. If the preconditioning isn't working the aux heater could be defective.
In that case the ICE would cut in frequently to heat up the car with the heat produced by the ICE.

But I am not convinced that it would lead it to run continuously as described.
