Good luck, this is the exact reason i'm thinking of moving away from Volvo, nobody can seem to work on them without using main dealer parts/tools.

I contacted many independent EV places regarding diagnosing my PHEV ERAD issues and none were interested, i'm afraid Volvo is the sort of brand now that you get shot of at the end of the manufacturers warranty to avoid possible high repair costs in year 5/6.

I suspect that will be the situation with most brands, and will only get worse as electric cars take over.

Most of Volvo's parts are made by reputable OEM suppliers who also suppy other brands. iirc the rear axle motor is maybe a GKN product? It is not Volvo making it difficult for the aftermarket, it is the aftermarket not keeping up with the pace of development. I would suggest give it 5 years and there will be plenty of aftermarket companies willing to recon motors or repair batteries. Rewinding motors is hardly a skill in short supply, we send off industrial motors for rewinds all the time at work

But take for example a VW, you could have an issue with a 2020 VW Golf R and take it to most places (independent specialists for VAG) and they would be able to resolve the issue with the use of a laptop and coding, You cannot do this with Volvo and most independents will not have detailed experience on the brand, most people on this forum are end users of SPA Volvo's, not experienced in the operations underneath so it's not good for community support either.

A VW forum on the other hand will pretty much be able to point you in the right direction, or there may even be a specialist present in the forum's to provide advice or pointers in resolving issues.

I know that VW has component protection but you can get somebody to dial in to your laptop to disable that to allow you to swap can bus modules yourself plug and play.

You are right, 5 years is the exact timescale, at least before anybody is up to speed or have tooling to work on these newer Volvo's. VW in the other hand, I suspect independents will catch up much quicker and end users will have better support outside of the dealer network.

Pretty much scares me to sink 50k into a car that very few independents can actually diagnose issues on, without at some point saying that you have to take it back to Volvo for something to be reset or done on their systems.

I have sunk 50k in and I'm scared to see how the XC90 got the most unreliable car of the year recently!

Good luck getting a diagnosus on a similar hybrid Merc, Bimmer or Lexus. If you think fiddling with their hybrid systems is any more accessible outside the dealer network then you have a nice surprise coming your way.
