Out of curiosity, what happens if it isnt replaced? Is it just a matter of more black smoke out the back as the DPF is no longer efficient or does it mean performance issues or rough running engine?

You will get a message saying "Particle filter blocked" or words to that effect and it will still be drivable but at reduced power . I'd wait until this happened if i owned one ...

I think that is what i shall be doing... cheers

NB: Is it worth filling it up with the lubricant at 72k just to try and extend its life do you think - and is this an easy DIY task?

I generally get about 38 mpg out of my 2.0D, but that is driven fairly fast. I previously owned a Fiat Punto 1.9JTD which did about 45mpg under similar circumstances. Considering the greater size, weight and performance of the Volvo the mpg doesn't seem too bad to me. I think by driving more gently I could easily average 45mpg.

I must admit some of the instintaneous mpg figures on the info centre are alarming, I have seen single figures! I can only guess that the figures are more "instintaneous" than in other manufacturer's trip computers.

Is that 38mpg on the computer or worked out? I get about 42mpg on the computer but assume its more like late 30's should I work it out properly... I dont drive slowly but dont exactly red line it either - fairly middle of the road really. Tend to hover around 80mph or just below on the motorway and do about 50/50 motorway and urban mileage.

well i pick up my new v50 2.D on the 25th of this month . from the advice on this thread it looks like i should be putting on my diving boots for the first 4000 miles then reverting back to my slippers . that way i will loosen the car up a bit.
i hope i get a good one as the cost of fuel is making me cry , i will head the advice on using branded fuel and not the supermarkets crap . but I'm still undecided about revving it up once a day to clear the pipes a bit .

please advise me otherwise ,in-case i have got it all wrong .

Mine won't be here till next month. Have seen this weeks Autocar and see new model destined for 09. Am now tempted to switch to V70 - will ring dealer tomorrow for discussion. See in this weeks Daily Telegraph reader is advised to get a Kia instead of a Volvo! Never!

I've never thought to check the computer....will be miffed if its that inaccurate as I was not overjoyed having to pay £400+ extra for the "convenience pack" to get it (on the 'S').

Yesterday I tried to drive very economically on a 60 mile drive (not exceeding 2000rpm in any gear) and managed an average of about 47mpg (on the computer at least) which I must admit is not great.

It doesnt look like fuel economy is one of the 2.0D's strengths!

Treidlia thanks. Very well put. I was going to reply to Wakeymans post as I didn't agree with it all, but there's nothing more to add.
