Default Surging acceleration / vacuum advice.

I was wondering if anyone could help.

My high miler T5 has developed a hesitation during hard and wide open throttle acceleration. It feels like the engine goes then holds back then back to normal and so on. It seems to settle a bit above 4k rpm but not always symptom free.

Before I start at sourcing big parts I would like to start with the nif naf that isn't expensive. It had a new set of plugs just over a year ago as part of a double belt change service. Since then I have replaced the turbo boost control valve solenoid, all 5 coil packs and the fuel filter.

I'm currently looking at replacing all the vacuum hoses and all I can gather from research is to use 4mm internal diameter fuel pipe and about 4 metres of it. Does anyone know what other sizes are needed and how much to get as i'll be placing the order soon.

If anyone has any ideas on what else to try then they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Drew

Any lights on the dash? is the exhaust leaking/blowing? what colour is the sticker on your ETM? What spark plugs were used? whats it like on tickover?

Thanks for the quick reply.

When I first got the car the idle hunted so took the etm off and gave the butterfly plate a damn good scrub as there was loads of hard baked gunge (used forum to know what to look at first).

As a high miler I would like to eliminate vacuum from my enquiries and the car will benefit from it either way. I was mainly looking for details on what size hose to get.

deathrider,

No lights and car runs silky at idle and while driving. Just hesitates under hard acceleration.

Yellow stickered etm. Recent rear section of exhaust too. The exhaust doesn't sound like its blowing anywhere while i've been under it with engine running.

The plugs used are those bosch ones with the pointy end. Sorry, i can't remember the proper code.

I cant remember there being this issue after the plugs were changed. The last time i checked them they looked fine.

Mis-fire on hard acceleration in any Turbo is 99% ignition.

Seeing as the plugs have been in there a year try some new VOLVO plugs

villan,

Was planning on misappropriating some electrolube from work to attempt a MAF clean. I thought about using MEK but heard it may be too extreme for the MAF so decided against it.

How would I diagnose front lambda sensor. I assume this is also known as O2 sensor.

I dont have any codes so nothing to go on.

960kg,

Will give Volvo plugs a go. Thanks for the tip.

Can anyone shed any light on the vacuum hose dimensions required for an overhaul. 176k miles could have taken its toll.

Thanks for everyones help so far.

i used 5mm and 7mm silicone vacume hose, i also replaced all the clips with stainless items.

My sugestion to you is find someone local with volvo software and get the codes read and live data done, this will tell you everything you need to know including the possibility of vacume leaks.

cheers simon,

Is that internal or external diameter or is it just ordered as 5mm silicone hose. How many metres of this stuff would i require. 4 of the small and 3 of the large?

I bought a Scantool Obdlink to look at live PID readings and all i detected was +7% long term fuel trim (by-product of lean condition). Everything else either didn't make sense or was something that could be taken for granted.

I pass my local Volvo dealer everyday and they have been good for me in the past and apparently the techs in there are good too. Will get proper plugs and start there.
