The difference in grip is absolutely night and day. On many roads in the western states vehicles without snow tires are banned during and after a snowfall.
Such bans in the East are episodic.
Wheels and snows for $200 ... sounds like Santa just came in

Today, during an unscheduled browse on ebay, I was quite taken by a seemingly good looking, 7 seater V70 D5 automatic with a transmission fault.

Within an hour, I'd negotiated a price and a transporter, paid for it with PayPal friends and family and all sight unseen.
What could possibly go wrong?

Well the transporter is dropping off tonight so I'll soon find out.

To be continued.....

Hi Simon
I hope it is ok with the auto box, you never know it may just need a flush and new filter, but it is getting colder,

Here she is from the advert and from what I can tell in the dark, it will be not far off that in the morning so a positive start but the positivity is thin on the ground.

I've had Vida on the job and cleared maybe 30 codes across multiple modules, most of which I put down to a flat battery.
Once jumped, it starts and idles very well indeed but the good news ends there I fear as I suspect the reason for the gearbox fault is similar to this thread.

There's definitely oil of some description in the coolant and given that the engine oil is clean, my thought is that the transmission oil has leaked into the cooling system and coolant the opposite way. I'm pretty sure that the only way this could happen is via the transmission oil cooler on the main coolant radiator.
Using Vida activations and data, all the wiring and electrical hardware in the box appear to function as expected but there is no drive whatsoever in any gear hence me thinking knackered clutches.
There are no transmission module faults stored though meaning the system doesn't know it's faulty, which surprises me.

I won't lose money on it because if broken for parts, there's enough good stuff on it to more than break even but I don't want to do that.

I planned for the worst but secretly (and naively) hoped for the best and the current situation means the only way is up..... Probably.

Default Transmission oil contaminated with coolant

Simon, from your diagnosis of the faulty V70, what does the contamination of the transmission oil with coolant look like? Does it form an emulsion? Or is there a discolouration in any way?

Cheers,
Bill

I haven't dipped the transmission oil yet to compare but the contents of the coolant bottle resemble diarrhoea instead of resembling the Caspian Sea.

^^ Thanks. I'd be interested to know if there is 'mayonnaise' on the transmission dipstick too.
