A 1.7...1.7 turbo or the 2.0l?

Is there much to choose between the different engines?

I had a 480 ES 1.7 about 15 years ago....

Really fun to drive around but the electrics finally gave out. It was prone to leak on the passenger door window which would leave a puddle under the front nearside carpet (common fault). Parts were easy enough to find through various sources back then and I should imagine the internet makes it a whole lot easier still.

I had to put a little effort in to keep it on the road especially over the winter but loved the summer months. Obviously garaged condition would have made a difference.

I would opt for a turbo or a 2.0 resp. 120hp and 175nm and 110hp and 165nm. There's not much noticeable difference in power output between these two. A turbo is much cheaper and easier to tune though. With chiptuning you can reach 160-170hp without other adaptations. Beware for the pre 1991 cars, they have a very bad rep regarding electronics/wiring. Halfway 1990 Volvo upgraded the wiring.
If you opt for a n/a 2.0i go for 1994 onwards, as the 1992 and 1993 2.0i engines use a LOT of oil. You can identify those engines from the red oildipstick. The better non oil using '94-'95 2.0i engines have a green dipstick.

Where is difference between 1992-93 and 94-95 engine? Have 1995 B20F and like you wrote, have green dipstick and don´t use oil.

Changes on B20F 208/209 '94 on(green dipstick) versus 116/118 old B20F (red dipstick '92-'93)
208&116 stands for the manual and 209&118 for the automatic ZF4 box.
These modifications were done by Volvo to reduce excessive oil use. Some red dipstick engines are modified by Volvo under warrenty, so there are some non oil using 116/118 engines around.
New:
Pistons and rings
Camshaft
Crankshaft and Main bearings
Connecting rods
No piston cooling anymore
Inlet manifold
Throttle body with adjusting screw for base settings is left
Oilcapacity 5.7L with filter, 2.2L between max and min, (old version had 5,4ltr and 2ltr between max and min) So the dipsticks aren't interchangeable!
Green dipstick 80kw@5200rpm 165nm@3500rpm comp.ratio 9,8:1
Red dipstick 81kw@5500rpm 165nm@3500rpm comp.ratio 9,5:1
