Question Leather seat cracks around stitching, is it normal?

I found my S90 leather backseats have cracks around the stitching when the car is around 10k miles (please see below pictures). But the problem is no one sits on my backseats at all.

I asked the dealership, they told me this is within the tolerance range and doesn't deemed as a fault of poor craftsmanship. The dealership said this was caused by stretching the leather cover over the foam a bit too much when they assemble the car.

Does anyone have this issue? Is it normal? Or am I being too nitpicky?

How old is the car?
Have you applied leather care twice a year?

That’s interesting. Leather being a natural product I should imagine over time it will stretch and that the marks will not get worse.

Are you going to trade the car in at 3 years or keep it long term.

If it were me I would watch it to ensure it gets no worse. I would also want to get someone sat in the chair for a while to ensure it does not get worse with a passenger in it.

Previous poster suggested leather fees which I totally agree with also.

Thanks for the reply.

I found the cracks when I had the car for 6 months. Now it's about 8 to 9 months and I worry these cracks would get worse.

What do you clean the leather with ? some cleaners can weaken the leather.
I'd imagine that part of the issue is the lack of use so the leather hasn't stretched since manufacture & any moisture in the material has dried out causing them to shrink slightly.

certainly not normal , see your dealer , Volvo are very good at improving quality and there could well be a service bulletin and improved parts available ... at least you will have registered the problem with warranty if the same happens again .

As Clan says, poor quality. The last photo clearly shows where the stitching does not follow the correct line. The stitches should be underneath the leather edge. The leather was pulled too tight when the top show stiching was done.

Yes , that cover should have been rejected at the quality control point , the needle has gone in the wrong place .

Thank you all for the replies. I tried contacting the dealer and the dealer contacted their Volvo rep, but the dealer told me that their Volvo rep said this is within the tolerance range and is not poor craftsmanship. However, I'll try to ask dealership again. Thank you all and the replies are very helpful to me.

Not sure how it works in USA but in UK the dealer makes their own decision regarding warranty .That is clearly poor quality Polish workmanship .
