Update: was tinkering with the car this morning, I thought I would have one last check of the air intake tubes and filter box. Rather than just inspect the tubing and the connection etc, I took all the tubes and connectors completely off the box and removed the lid. That's when I found it! ...one of the locator lugs on the underside of the airbox lid was bent out at a stupid angle thus preventing the lid from locating properly. It must have been holding open a decent size gap. Unfortunately the plastic lug snapped off when I tried to straighten it, but it didn't really matter once the outer groove was straightened out. I put it all back together, started the engine and immediately noticed that the rough idle when cold was all but gone.
Delighted, I jumped in and went for a spin. No kangeroo jumping or lumpy engine. After a couple of minutes it became apparent that the engine felt much smoother and more powerful in low revs, felt more responsive too (there had been a slight delay on the throttle response). I believe the car is now driving as it should. I am delighted!
The engine service message has gone away too, but the emissions service message still remains, as does the amber CE light. Will it self reset if the issue has gone or will it have to be done with the scanner thingy?
