I have a bad feeling about this - Haldex
2010 xc60 D5 AWD auto, quite recently I have had the strangest fault, at roughly 45-50 mph clunks and vibration from the rear at time and the sensation of dragging for a for a few seconds.
The vibrations is from the whole car the back resonates for a sec or two. I thought it might be the auto box but after trawling this site I fear MY AWD system is quite ill. and this sounds like a lot of money. I am reluctant to drive her. My Volvo dealer is quite a distance away. Would a decent general mechanic know his or her way around a Volvo AWD or is it too specialist a job.

Pull the AWD system fuse (find the number in the handbook) and then drive it to see if you get that "dragging" feeling. If it goes away with the fuse out, your AWD system is locking up - in that case don't drive it with the system active.
Most good garages should be able to deal with it - the Haldex system is used on Volvo, VW, and many other cars. It's so reliable, second hand parts are cheap.

Well, it looks as if this could be the end of the road and I'm gutted.
Two independent garages have been checked and it's the gearbox, one garage is owned by a friend and he pulled favours, a gearbox oil analysis was done and the oil is burnt. Their advice is repairs will be very expensive with no guarantee of a lasting fix. I have been advised to sell

What is the mileage? Have you ever towed?

Never towed, no tow bar ever fitted. 130,000 miles.

Any metal deposits found in the oil analysis? Perhaps a decent oil flush of the gearbox and haldex might help.

In the current car market, the value of your vehicle may have risen by £1,500 to £2,500 in the last 12 months.
I would be tempted to invest that in a gearbox rebuild at a transmission specialist. I've seen adverts for a full recon with 1 year / 10k mile warranty for circa £2k. That will be much cheaper than changing. You have a VERY rare spec of car - I'd keep it on the road. I will likely be the cheaper option also. These chaps have a good reputation on here : https://hortoncars.co.uk/latest-news...arbox-repairs/

I sometimes think I'm quite good at answering questions - but once again Mr Clan has hit the nail on the head. (He's a creature of habit...).
Advice to "sell it" is completely different from "it needs this replacing and it will cost £x,xxx.xx so really it's not economic to repair it." Find someone who knows what they're doing, the guys you have asked so far likely don't. We get a lot of members on here with "problem cars" but factually over 50% of those are "problem mechanics".
