Default Looking for Socket Sets etc

Hi,

I`m after some tools for working on cars - specifically for a 2013 XC90 D5.

Until now, I`ve always taken my cars to the local mechanic for repairs but I`ve decided it`s time to learn to do some basic jobs myself and get a good set.

I think I'm looking at a socket set (impact drill set?), ratchet, extension bits for sockets, torque wrench etc etc but I'm starting from nothing so any advice on what I need would be helpful. Ive got the chocks and jacks on the way (chosen with previous advice excellently given from here!).

If anyone has any good 2nd hand sets they want to sell, please PM me or reply here.

Thanks,

Ben

Echo that. Bought loads of tools from car boots. Top quality used beats new tat anytime.

I have to say 3/8 drive stuff is under rated.

+1 for good used stuff. My motley collection over 50 years includes makes like Britool, Gordon, King Dick, plus a few ex-MOD ..... Lots on eBay, but carriage can be costly.

thanks everyone. This is great advice - I will look on eBay for some second hand sets!

Are there any good brands to look for? Ive read that 'Snap On' are good. Any other brands that are good to look for second hand?

Facom, Kamasa, Roebuck, Bedford, Gordon, Britool. Just make sure some British makes are metric, some don’t say with older stuff, I noticed one or two on eBay didn’t make it clear, not fair really.

For home use it’s less critical, there’s good gear to be had if you look!🧐👍

Don't laugh but Halfords pro range is pretty good stuff and i believe comes with a lifetime warranty.

Recently started going to our local auction house:~
On many occasions the place has had plenty of tools- sockets & work cabinets.
All sorts things come through to include welders.. you name it.

Many of these are to engineering standards at a fraction of the normal price- probably the suppliers for the likes of ebay.
Bob.
