18T or 19T Turbo
Hi Guys..Perhaps some of you could help me make a decision here.
My CAT needs replacing anytime now and as the turbo whines a slight amount when the engine is cold, I thought I'd do the turbo too (Ouch!). Anyway, I have RICA software now and it goes great but, what I'd like to know is what differences in acceleration/power characteristics I'll see. Will the 19T reduce my low end torque due to slower spool-up. I don't want to lose torque at all even if I don't gain more at the top end. So, should I get another 18T or go for the 19T. Any comments appreciated.

The 19T will lose you some low down grunt, because it effectively moves the whole torque band further up the rpm range.

RE: 18T or 19T Turbo
Good morning Ian,
You may already know that you cannot fit anything but standard Volvo downpipes with cat to the AWD cars.... there is just no room to get a fatter pipe through. On the turbo front, there is very little difference between the 18 and 19's, the main difference being the larger casting on the 19 that turns the spent gasses before the downpipe, with that later downpipe having a much easier first turn. I have just had the 18 off my old S70 T5 completely reworked by a specialist: only put it back on the car a few days ago. I will be having the Dastek/Unichip reset in the next week or so to take account of this work. When I have had it on the rolling road and if there is a satisfactory result I will be offering this work for arround the £775 plus VAT mark with some warranty as the turbo's effect will hopefully be enhanced and it will be fully rebuilt. I will also be able to let you know exactly what has been done for your money. Regards, Don.Norchi. www.kalmar-union.com |

RE: 18T or 19T Turbo
I had this conversion done on my car.
The torque curve is changed is changed throughout the rev range and is less with the 19T. On the 19T the power came in at about 5000 rpm which to be honest on the open road is a waste of time. On the track it was superb. If I had my choice again I would stay with the 18T (for a road car). The power delivery is better at the bottom end and also no need to pay for a remap. Don't forget with the RICA and AWD it will be suck it and see as the boost etc will not be set on a dyno (they only have a 2WD) so I would stick with a standard map. It you want it set properly on a dyno then go to Holland where RICA do have an AWD dyno. Just my advice Karl |

Only problem is that no dyno operator will dyno the 97/98 V70R AWD because the the AWD coast down problem.

My understanding is that the problem with AWD is that the rollers are used to drive the car inorder to get the 'at the fly wheel' figure. Just do not do this. Why not disconnect the rollers and use the brakeing system on the car. My car was dyno'd without any problems. Use the dyno to get the power and tuning parameters correct. karl |

Sorry Guys...Should have posted back. Many thanks for all your input and advice. I am going to stick with an 18T.
Thanks again. Karl, how's the M3 going?

I've had assurances from the technical director at Scandinavian Car Tuning (http://www.sct-tuning.com) that their 3" high flow downpipe will fit my RHD MY2000 V70R AWD. It's possible they could be mistaken, but I did explicitly ask if it would fit - twice. Campbell... |

RE: 18T or 19T Turbo
Good day Campbell,
I should have qualified that earlier post as referring to the original shape V70 AWD, not the current model. I will check with my supplier as to whether their downpipe does fit the right hand drive later models. I suspect that SCT are sourcing from the same firm. I have to say that I have not stocked them as I have so far not had an enquiry for one. I do keep stock of all the downpipes and cat-back systems for the current front wheel drive vehicles Regards, Don. www.kalmar-union.com |
