I did mine myself a while back.
when I bought my S60 the previous owner had bought mintex discs and pads all round BUT ONLY fitted the front ones...leaving the rear ones in the boot for me to fit I then read about the handbrake shoes coming apart so bought some mintex ones...did the lot myself in about an hour....when I took the old discs off BOTH lower shoes had the brake material coming away due to corrosion of the shoe metal surface, so lucky I did it when I did it was a nice little job actually. I have seen cases where the hub is completely wrecked due to the brake material coming off the shoe at high speed due to corrosion on the Genuine Volvo shoes... costing £££'s if you are in any doubt as to weather yours has had new shoes then fit them ASAP..for the sake of £20 for mintex rear shoes and easy to fit it is not worth the gamble imho |

I've just bought this kit:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3205589993...84.m1439.l2649 Comes with everything you need except the excellent advice given out here! I'm quite frustrated at the moment because my kit arrived this morning and I have really bad tennis elbow which prevents me doing the job Can't use the car because mine went CRACK on one side at about 50 mph, carried on ok but the handbrake travel has increased so I assume my shoes have broken up. Had to drive 8 miles home but there were no funny noises so fingers crossed! It's a 2.0 T, 56 plate with 61k miles. |

Big for the guide used it today to replace my rear brakes.
Had a lucky escape this week in that the car was MOT'ed & they adjusted the handbrake for me to get it the pass. However when it started raining on Friday the handbrake seized on needing a callout to the AA to release it. The garage had the car back readjusted the handbrake (mmmm) & pronouced all well & good. After much reading on here I'm not convinced so deceided to strip down the offside wheel today & have a look. 1st horror was the inside brake pad had less that 1mm of friction material on it so I don't think it should have ever passed the MOT. So I think new pads needed but lets check the shoes. 2nd Horror & lucky escape One of the shoes had completely lost its friction material & it was just sat in the bottom of the hub waiting to wreak havoc at the 1st opportunity. Quick call to GSF in Basingstoke they had the parts 25% online discount & then an afternoon doing the refit. Them springs are a bit of a bugger to remove & refit but finally succeeded in doing 1 side the other to follow tomorrow. |

Potentially a dumb question: is it a good practice to replace shoes when disc/pads are being replaced ie are they more or less on the same maintenance schedule? Sounds like I need to take them off anyway to get the discs off, correct?

No, the shoes sit behind discs, discs, callipers & carriers off to change/check shoes.
Pads sit in calliper outside of disc, so only calliper removal required for pad change. It is vital that the shoes are checked, as they are prone to delaminating & can cause hub damage in some failure cases.

As Marmitespreader said there is a bit more work involved in getting at the shoes for an inspection or replacement. I don't really see the point of an inspection as by the time the discs are off etc etc. Given the shoes known bad behaviour I replaced the shoes at 94k and when the disc comes due soon 132k there will be more new shoes. My version of best practice is change them shoes every four years no matter what. If before that the lever one morning rides higher , change the shoes. If there is a clunk or sticking reversing out your drive, change the shoes If the Cuckoo arrives early, change the shoes. Thanks! So if I understand correctly once I've taken off both pads and discs I should be able to have a good view of the shoes. Aside from obvious full degredation of friction material, are there other signs I should look for to confirm that they are in need of replacement? I've signed myself up to help a friend replace his rear pads and discs - I just want to make sure I'm doing right by him while the stuff is off.
