having fitted the optional adjuster on the other car i did notice at times that the retention springs did not sit right and caught on the brake drum on odd times.

I'd say about 8 to 10 years. The life of the glue they are stuck on with now. If they were riveted on they'd probably last forever.

Default Replacement Failed????

Has anyone actually seen a replacement pair of shoes fail?

...or is this only related to the OEM shoes originally fitted to the car?

Since no one is replying to this, there are only two options:
  1. Either no one cares anymore
  2. or that only the first OEM set of pads fail and everyone who had them changed is safe...

Any comments anyone?

In the case of the XC90 & some other models they haven't been around long enough for a replacement set of shoes to fail. Not sure when rivets were replaced by glue but I think it's failure of the glue that's the issue.

Talking Done mine with help from this post

Just fitted new shoes discs and pads + new set of brake shoe springs.
i got all from fleabay the spings and shoe fitting kit was from )brakesinit) 8.99 posted.
The discs are REAR GROOVED BRAKE DISCS AND PADS at 69.00 they seem good quality a bit over the top being grooved and dimpled but it has made a big difference braking so ill use theese when the fronts need changing,

took me about 41/2 hours the best bit to do is remove the slider pins clean them re-grease with synthetic grease there tight and awkward to get off you will need a 7mm allen key and you only get a quarter turn to remove. ill look out for a quarter inch drive bit with a 7mm allen key soo.
Thanks for the write up and pictues as i needed them to refer to.

All this was caused by a slightly seized calyper over heated the disk and cracked and the offside linings came away from the shoes.

Default Struggling to Re-fit Brake Discs

Firstly great post many thanks.

However, unlike most people here that struggled to remove the brake disc I am struggling to re-fit mine.
I have checked that the shoes are right (compared with the old), and have fitted and re-fitted the retaining springs. The whole mechanism "feels" right, as in it all feels sprung and held on.
But the disc simply will not fit back over the shoes...
Obviously I cannot just bang it on, or else it will be binding, but the assembly will not accept the disc. Any thoughts or suggestions?

(should mention that I am re-fitting the same disc, and merely changing the shoes)

Many Thanks,
V

Have you loosened off the 10mm handbrake adjustment nut which is situated under a little flap right next to the handbrake.

Try this and once you have the discs back on readjust using the same nut.

Now that the cable is slackened have you tried pushing the shoes in slightly towards the centre of the hub? I had the same problem you described and this worked for me.
