You can draw 20amps indefinitely through a 13amp fuse and it wont blow. In fact I am going to suggest this is exactly what happened here. The charging box faulted and was drawing enough current to melt the plug and socket but not enough to blow the fuse. Scary.

Can a moderator or admin redact it and the replies above to remove the references ? I tried sending a message to a forum support team member but I cannot as I don't have 30 posts apparently. Could someone else do this for me ? thanks Last edited by allycat; Oct 30th, 2019 at 12:50. |

Must go round the house and reduce fuses to either 3 or 5amp where I can just for safety sake. I have a modern Crabtree fuse board which is chock full or RCBOs and have MK Logic faceplates all through the house but checking and reducing plug fuses where possible can only be a good thing....

Had my charging cable replaced under warranty to the newer version which does not have option to change amps after a similar experience.

This is an interesting subject. Certainly some examples UK 13A plugs & sockets are not really up to passing 13A continuously. I've seen several instances of correctly-functioning and fused appliances (mainly three-bar electric fires) causing scorching to sockets, and when I was looking at installing wall-mounted electric heaters a couple of years ago (a now-abandoned plan) my electrician advised that I have them hard-wired to fused/switched outlets instead of just plugging them in.
13A for a short period (kettle, etc) is one thing, and devices with greater diversity of current draw (power tools, etc) are another, but a true continuous 13A can be problematic for the standard hardware. I don't know how much better the higher quality / branded stuff copes, but I've certainly seen it before. I have been curious about how this might apply to electric cars! That's not to say that this is not a fault (very much sounds like it!), and that the master tech's explanation isn't guff. I would suggest connecting the car to the wall via a power meter, or using a current clamp around the cable, to see what it's actually pulling. That should tell you more about what's going on. cheers James

I keep getting this exact problem as to OP. I haven’t yet approached Volvo, and I’m getting a trained electrician out to see what’s going on. I’ve tried three separate ring circuits at the house and each time the plug gets so hot and very quickly the charging gets ‘interrupted’ as the cable has shut off….
Anyone else got this problem? Should say it’s the standard Mennekes cable which I think is the earlier version, charges from 10A max to 6A
