Default Help with 2004 XC90 steering issue

Hi all

Newbie here and i need some advice.

Just bought a 2004 D5 XC90 but i have noticed a problem with the steering, i have read in the forums that these do have problems with the steering racks but i need some advice first before i go ahead with a new steering rack.

These are the problems i have noticed:

Going around a roundabout the steering seems to pull back a little trying to straighten the wheel

Also i have noticed on one occasion the steering became heavy when turning at low speeds.

Is this a steering rack problem or is there another cheaper fix i can try to sort the problem?

Many thanks

Not uncommon in Volvos. My V70 used to do it. It might be a rack issue or a change of fluid could help. It could be a pump issue.

Don't guess and start changing parts (or let anyone else do it) without diagnosing the problem properly. That will get expensive quickly.

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked at the fluid and it is very brown in colour so i think i will try a fluid change first as i have some of the green fluid that is recommended.

I have also noticed a leak on the hose going into the power steering pump so will address this as well and fingers crossed it helps.

The steering pump will often be damp. Mine has been since the day I bought it, but it does not lose fluid.
