Default Rear silencer fracture

S80 2000 model year 170bhp with 163k on the clock.

Dreaded MOT due so checked around and detected a blowing exhaust. Found out that the entire tail pipe has broken clean away from the back of the rear silencer. Repair looks out of the question so it's a new box.
Trouble is - there does not appear to be a joint anywhere in the pipe between the front box/pipe running up the centre of the car and the rear silencer. I know it's possible to buy just the silencer/tail pipe but does anyone have any experience of fitting them. Is it a question of cutting the pipe and then flaring it to make a joint for the new piece.

Hello, In the absence of some devilish requirement to replace factory original parts in their entirety that's exactly what's involved. Pretty standard stuff. I had this done to a car recently and it came to 200USD. Please post what your remedy required and what it cost. Hope it's not to dear. At 163K the old one doesn't owe you a penny. Kira

Same thing happened on my previous car, (P1 V70,) when after the rear braket had rusted and eaten into the tail pipe the car was driven over a particuarly vicious speed hump. Tail pipe snapped off clean. Had the whole exhaust replaced at ATS for £190.71 in April 2008. Good job and no further issues.

I asked a main dealer about this a few years ago for a V70. The part was about £300 but the fitting was only about £30. Given the amount dealers normaly charge I would say its cut the pipe and clamp on the new one. I would not expect you need to flaring the pipe.
