Default Winter tyres in warm and real city MPG on v70 my09

Hi all, 2 small Q's

1. I fitted a set of Dunlop Sport winter 5 tyres for my trip into Europe recently and figured I'd keep them on till March or when it reaches the 15c mark. Issue is we have had scorching December weather and it's been 12c to 16c all week! My Q is, am I permanently damaging the tyres by using them in this weather?

2. I've seen most of you quoting real mpg figures of the low to mid 30's for the v70, my v70 2.4d 2009 175ps is supposed to be slightly better than the 08 d5 on fuel yet I'm getting 27mpg around town. I dare the car with the wife who is no spring chicken so I'm confused, is this normal for the car? I mean it came pristine from volvo with fvsh so I don't think anything is wrong with it.

If you are not going fast or cornering at high speed you're be ok.

Just wondering if you have told or asked your insurance company if you need to notify them as you fitted them most aren't interested to be fair but a couple are.

Average 11mph is pretty good in inner london. Have you considered a bicycle.

yes your soft compound winter rubber is going to wear out faster in warm weather, hardly needed for london. But if youre dont do many miles does it matter ? Id put spare wheels on with ordinary tyres, assuming you have somewhere to store such things.

27 mpg at 11 mph is waaaaaay better than my D5 haha. I get 35 odd as a general average but more like 38 on my long motorway commute

Driving at 15C will not harm a winter tire unless being driven for long periods such as weeks-months. I would say what's damaging are temperatures above 20-25C for longer periods (such as during summer days). In warm weather the soft rubber compound frees oils and hardens (permanently) and also wears down exceptionally fast. As a general rule it is good to keep the winter tires for temperatures bellow 10-15C.

My local tyre guy reckons it's ok to leave winters on all year round. My neighbour does seem to leave his Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme on all year on his Disco, which is igger and heavier than a V70. I would say you ok leaving them on until March.

A V70 isn't n ideal car for inner city driving. For the type of driving you do I would say that you are getting what can more or less be really expected.

There is no risk of permanent damage to winter (snowflake symbol) tyres by using them in summer temperatures - but they will wear more quickly, especially with spirited driving or towing. Whether they will wear so quickly that it is worth spending £100 to £120 to swap the tyres twice is debatable - depends on mileage. You will also probably have less grip near the limit due to tread block deformation because of the siping.

This very topic has been covered in depth recently on the XC90 forum with links to manufacturers websites etc.

I've run Nokian WR D3 from last February and all through the summer, motorway, country lanes etc, no problems and no noticeable change in mpg. I've run them for about 15k and they still have around 5-6mm.

I ran mine all year (marshal), and never experienced any issues. Was going to change to my summer set but those wheels are in dire need of a refurb and I never got round to it, then it was winter again.
