Default V50 2004 Cabin Fumes In Blowers

Hello.

I was getting a rather strong smell of fumes through the blowers in the cabin on my Volvo V50. it was not too bad when moving, mainly worse when stationary. The smell is like exhaust fumes, My mechanic looked for a cracked manifold/exhaust damage, he says okay, just changed cabin filter. blower much stronger now . but still the fume smell.

Would anyone have had a similar experience.

Regards

It has 2.0d 2004 model.

178K, but I have mainly looked after it. I have just been running around in it this afternoon, and it appears a little better, so it may have need to just blast through from old cabin filter.......

That ****ty oily burning smell, when cars been running for for 10 mins in garden is there also when you get out of car and walk past engine bay.....

Think she is just getting old

Thanks for the replies

Hi.

The blowers are certainly better, and the smell is not as bad, but its still there. worse on cold startup, and when stationary......

it does not smell like burnt oil, more like exhaust fumes, could it be something as simple as a leaking exhaust in the area of where the blower heat exchanger is....I don't know much about how the heat for blowers get its heat from the engine etc...

Any Ideas?

Thanks

The intake of the blower is situated under the cowl where the windscreen wipers are attached .. the closest exhaust fumes source would be the EGR assembly "valve + actuator + cooling pipe" .. take a look up there, you may find a crack.

The exhaust manifold is not too far off either .. but to check it, you'll need to remove the under tray and get under the car with a torch.

What you'll be looking for.

I would say that the fumes are coming from a fractured exhaust flexi on the down-pipe. Diesel engines don't sound all that different when there's a hole in the exhaust so these things are often discounted as the driver normally expects a horrendous noise when the exhaust fails.

On a similar note the flexi-pipe often fails because the engine mounts are worn allowing too much engine movement; the flexi-pipe takes the strain.

Hi, I think my girlfriend's 2009 V50 1.6D has this problem. I noticed a while back that there was more vibration than usual while idling and now she is complaining of exhaust fumes in the cab. A few questions:

Which engine mount(s) is the most likely suspect?
Is the exhaust flexi easy to replace or does it need welding?
Anything else I should know before attempting this job?

Thanks,
Tony

I could imagine a cracked exhaust leading to fumes getting sucked into the cabin.

All 3 engine mounts are fairly frequent failures. Each is pretty easy to replace.
