2010 XC90 - USB not working
Hi all,
I'm a happy owner of a 2010 XC90 Executive. This is my first post and unfortunately it's for a small problem I'm facing. A couple of days ago I was parked and while the engine was on, I unplugged the USB cable from my iPhone (connected via cable to glove USB) and let it go. I was very unlucky as the cable went straight in the car lighter socket which was unprotected... I saw small sparks coming out while the cable would contact the inside of the lighter socket. I quickly turned the engine off but I think that the damage is already done. All the radio functions work except for the USB. I have tried different cables and different devices. I get the message to Connect USB device. I see no power indication on devices I connect. Today I removed the radio and glove compartment to understand where the USB cables connected and realised that it goes straight on the radio unit. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if there is a fuse in the radio unit for USB only that could have been blown. Thank you very much in advance! |

USB ports supply 5V which is normally protected against short circuits.
If all devices connected show no power indication then the 5V supply for the USB port is knackered. It normally is not fused. It normally survives short circuits and overload, but you fed it 12V backwards, which normally is enough to kill anything. I understood the USB interface was a separate module, but maybe on the later radios if went directly into the radio. Best thing to do is buy a replacement radio of same part number, and see if you can replace the USB interface - assuming it is a separate circuit board.

Hello,
i have the Dynaudio system on my 2007 xc90, can i add such a thing to it, a USB input? i have seen a option from Grom audio but it seems a bit expensive, around 200 euros and i don't think it's wotrh. Best regards. |

The GROM option is much cheaper than the genuine Volvo USB interface
And the Volvo interface replaces the 6-CD CD changer. CD changer or USB, One or the other, never both.

Thanks for the quick reply,
yes, the interface connects to the cd changer input. i have a Cd player for only one cd that won't eject, so...no worries there . Cheers. |

What are the odds?
This exact same thing happened to us. My wife let her charging cable drop while plugged into the glove box usb. It fell into the 12V charger, sparked and stopped working. With nothing else to do during quarantine I decided to work on it. I first tried replacing the USB harness hoping it was just a cable, but no luck. The usb harness plugs directly into the back of the CD player so I ordered a used one off of eBay for $65, and success! Everything works again.
