Default Emmison service light on my '99 S80- Why?!

Hi,
I have a 1999 S80 2.4 which has served me every well for over two years, covering nearly 50000 miles in that time, with a total of over 148000!
Only issue I have is a message in the drivers display area saying 'emmision service due', and a small orange light (lamda) stays on.
The car seems exactly the same to drive as she always has done, so I doubt there is anything too much wrong.
However, if someone could maybe confirm / deny before I head to my local Volvo specialist, as I like to be pre warned if possible!
Many thanks,
Carl.
