Charging plug flap
Good Afternoon All,
My wife has recently brought the Volvo XC60 PHEV. Just a quick question as I can't seem to figure this out myself and I cannot find any topic which covers it. The charging point, can you lock it? The fuel flap locks which is great but I cannot lock the charging point flap. I don't want anyone messing with it and or hurting themselves while touching it without my knowledge. Am I the only one that appears to think that it should lock with the car? |

Hi Clan,
I understand that the plug locks when charging but the flap itself can be opened by anyone (e.g. kids messing about) at any time. I have looked into how safe the charging port on the car is when not in use and there is no data from manufactures. I hold some electrical knowledge and it seems rather unusual to have exposed pins, it doesn't fill me with much confidence. |

The pins carry no voltage while exposed.
The pins that are exposed are very much equivalent to the "exposed" pins on the inlet IEC connector of a PC - the source of the power is from the cable end, which does not have exposed pins. This is an AC input and it is feeding an AC-DC SMPS, albeit a powerful one (3.3kW in the case of the XC60, but the type-2 mennekes connector services up to 3-ph 32A (22kW) input for Level 2 charging, even 3-ph 63A in the case of the Renault Zoe). However, in most EVs the charge port cover does lock, so it's surprising that volvo did not do so. |
