Gross Vehicle Weights etc. are always on charts and "allowable" loads are commonly something like GVW minus (Vehicle Weight + driver's weight).
In my owner's manual the permissible weight load is 930 lbs. After subtracting the driver's weight and that of a helper, it appears 3 trips are what you need to be safe and smart. Just drop the back seat throughout this task. Remember to increase your tire pressure. The idea is to maintain the profile of the tire, not let it squash down under load. Brakes OK? |

I took some 720kg (me included) in gardentiles in my Mondeo that I owned before the Volvo. It (actually the trailerhitch screws) scraped the tarmac when I hit a bump on the motorway. Beyond that, it functioned just fine during and afterwards, but I would advice against it...

Three big rear passengers would be close to 250kg, add another 70kg trunk cargo and you come close to the numbers George says. I wouldn't like to throw 500kg in the trunk alone for 2 trips, and anyway I wonder if the trunk floor cover would handle it : perhaps better to remove it altogheter along with the spare tire. And drive safely, the handling will be quite different

Sorry but you have entered into my soapbox area re weight a V70 can carry. According to various brochures I have the weight has varied from 450kgs for a P1 Volvo V70 upto 602Kgs for my 2002V70 T5, with the average being approx. 500kgs. (diesels have a lower capacity - assume its to do with the engine?) I actually wrote to Volvo asking if 5 men my size ( 6'3" and 17 stone ) would over load my Volvo, if we went on holiday with a caravan in tow and 15 kgs of luggage each in the boot. (Nett weight approx. 650 kgs )The answer I received was worthy of a politician and assured and advised caution in equal measure.
I am comforted by my vision of watching a Ford Fiesta passing me several years ago with 5 burly gents showhorned in, sparking its way down the A1 to I assume watch an England Rugby match, festooned as it was with scarfs, and flags For work I regularly carried 500Kgs of concrete blocks in the back ( seats down and evenly loaded) Never had an issue, just kept extra distance between me and vehicle in front, and made sure my life insurance was upto date.... Our V70 has a max weight of 2150kg. On test day it can tip the scales at 1700kg. This leaves a surprisingly low payload of 450kg ish. Petrols are better.
I am surprised to hear wood being offered on a weight basis. Generally it's sold as a volume and a cubic metre is called a 'tonne'. Depending on how dry it is and whether hard or softwood a cubic meter loosely stacked can weigh as little as 350kg. Conversely a metric tonne, 1000kg, could occupy three cubic meters. |
