Default Message not in Volvo Handbook: what does it mean?

Whilst driving through France recently, a message came up on the screen in the car saying something like "Engine not working to full capacity". Then the car lost power and stopped. It could then be restarted and drove well. I have had this happening four times during a two month stay in France and it was rather frightening, because part of the journey was on the motorway where it could have been dangerous.

This message does not appear in the Volvo Handbook. The car had been regularly serviced at a Volvo garage.

Any ideas as to what it meant and what action necessary. It is a diesel car and I wondered whether some dirt had got in when I previously filled the car.

Is there be a fault code recorded in the cars computer? That would seem a good place to start.
