Default oil coming out filler cap ?

i I have not long ago bought a oldld 850 in my opinion just run in at 180ks it is a lovely runner, I hope to keep it a long time, can any one help oil coming out of filler cap, I don’t know where to start,
1) I’m going o do a compression test
2) Some of 850 users have changed seal on filler cap? Is it that simple
3) I have bought a Haynes book
4) Been looking for breather’s pipes in case any are blocked
5) Under the injectors looks like an oil catcher if is can you take it of without taken them off?
Any advice will be appreciated thanks Barry

Go to the Bay 13 & Ozbricks forum they have heaps on the cause of the leaks usually it's a pressure buildup in the crankcase, blocked flame trap is a special, the inlet manifold has to come off to remove the oil trap, usually has to be replaced with a new one if it's u/s (the oil trap that is).

how much oil is coming out of the filler? The cheapest, easiest and commonest cause is an age and heat hardened sealing ring in the cap. You can get them from Volvo's or Nordic for less than a quid.

Excess crankcase pressure, as Cocka said, is usually due to blocked breather hoses. I've just got mine to do, total cost with VOC discount was £65 + VAT for all the hoses, oil trap, fittings and manifold gasket. You will generally see this pressure as oil weapage/leakage from camshaft and /or crankshaft oil seals. Manifold is easy to get off - the bottom row of bolts only need slackening as the manifold is slottted here. I found the most awkward bolt to get at was the dipstick bracket on the underside of the manifold.

i would firstly get a new cap, if you are building excess perssure there will be signs of leakage from your dip stick....check your oiltrap pipe to pcv connection on the inlet air pipe being careful not to snap the pipe, the connection may well be blocked..
as was said before the whole system can be replaced for not too much and in not too much time....
brian, i assume your parts came from nordic, that seems a good price, i think i paid closer to £100 for my bits....

No, the parts came from Johnsons Cars in Gloucester (our nearest main agent) with VOC discount as I also needed idlers pulleys, water pump, belt etc for the cambelt change and Nordic don't stock these.

I have always found them excellent in the parts dept for helpfulness and speed of obtaining specially ordered parts.

I have to say, though, that whilst I would always try Nordic first, their prices for Volvo bits (pads, belts etc) are not much cheaper than the main agent, and they often don't have the things that I actually need (engine mounts, suspension bolts, idler pulleys, gaskets).

I agree totally everytime I've ordered something from Johnsons they've been great. Ordered a bolt on Friday on site about 11am they had to request it from somewhere else (don't know where off hand) it arrive saturday morning through my letter box, thats quick!! Thank you Carl

I had the same problem with my filler cap. I bought a new washer and still had a leakage. I learnt from this forum that when you take the filler cap off you have to;

1) Remove the black washer and clean all traces of oil from the cap and washer. It is a pain, but works for me.

I've never had a leak from the filler cap since using this procedure.

Please check that your flame trap is clear. If it is blocked, damage to the seals in the engine can occur.

Regards Lawrence

Red face oil coming out of filler cap

my problem. I conducted the compression test and was very surprised how good the psi. Was lowest being 170.5 psi to 195 psi I think this is very good considering the age 1994 and mileage of the car. When going to purchase a oil filler cap seal the very helpful parts department in Stockton on tees informed me to remove the fire trap and clean pipes out. On inspection these where caked up and the small pipe which the Haynes manual say not to remove, was so blocked I could not get a welding rod down had to purchase a pipe for £1.00 from local part dealer. This was all because of lack being maintained by previous owners, thanks again to all that helped Barry
