Both these tools works nice with any Y2K+ cars (V40), the problem with the Volvo 850 was they did not supply OBDII signals from the engine control, only custom morse codes.
With a proper OBDII reader you are only able to check the speedometer and airbag computer on Volvo 850. |

OBDII fun and games...
Thank you to Frobe70 and Jocksuper7 for replies, after seeing the first one from Jocksuper7 I ordered the U480 via e-bay. I assumed that he had got a Volvo 850 to post the info on this thread and all was well, seems he has a v40 with a different OBD system, Frobe70 has highlighted the matter that the 850 is a morse type system so I am back to square one. Does anybody know if the U480 can at least be used to reset the warning lights? Sadly the suppliers offer no tech help or support but do offer a refund.... Or I can sell it on e-bay again. wish I could go back to the days of my p1800 and 122s where life with a Volvo was a sheer delight and not a technical nightmare!

What year & engine has your 850?
A DIY budget code reader can be found here: http://www.onboarddiagnostics.co.uk/...ategory/2/2/2/ Depending on the engine fitted you may be able to read/reset engine fault codes with a DIY switch & LED code reader, search this forum for the method. The ABS problem is most likely the ECU, seach this forum for the DIY repair method. |

Where is the dreaded ECU located?
Thanks to everybody who has read or posted on this thread...
My U480 arrived yesterday from the States, it seems to be a fantastic bit of kit, well made with good instructions and guide but as I was advised it will not work on the 850 estate. I will decide either to keep it for when I get a later car or sell it on.....Seems it WILL work on a multitude of models including the newer CAN-BUS systems. So, I am going to try to build my own reader and try to get rid of the pesky warning lights by removing the ECU overnight if anybody can tell me where to find it in the car? |

Thanks Murph, I know where the socket is, was talking about the main unit to take out and reset it, has anybody else ever done this?
