phase 1 key fob?
hi all, just wondering if the p1s would have had a keyfob originally for the central locking as mine came with 2 keys that dont have buttons or anything and as such it unlocks manually in the lock, and if they did come with them could I pick up just a fob and then programme it to the car using a series of ignition positions and button pushing like other cars, or would it be a case of having to get it coded to the car, or as my car hasn't got one is it possible that it never had it so theres no option of having one?
thanks in advance

s40 key fob
My x reg / 2000 P1 v40 does have a fob with lock/unlock and just the Volvo name were you might normally find the boot option.
There was a thread on this somewhere - might have been on the v70 section. |

Yes, my old '97 had the two button fob, the same as the P2. Only Volvo can programme them and my local dealer will only programme a new fob bought from them. I had a new key and fob programmed for the P2 which cost about £270 all in, so I would think a new fob would be half of that.

Our Phase 1 has a seperate module, located above the cabin fusebox under the offside dashboard. By seperate, I mean it's modular, not part of the ECU or anything.
The fob has two buttons, marked "lock" and "unlock" although these are actually a misnoma - they activate the alarm, and the alarm operates the locks. In that regard, they are better considered to be "arm" and "disarm". The central locking is operable manually with the keys in the doors, but the alarm ignores this. When armed, unlocking the doors this way will trigger it. When disarmed, locking the doors manually will not arm it. Edit: Now that I think about it again, I /think/ the remote sensor is itself a seperate module from the alarm. I'll have another look tomorrow. Last edited by canis; Nov 4th, 2017 at 19:34. |

I believe, keyless entry box and two fobs from the same car and you're good to go! Might want to check the wiring is in place before going to that effort. Should be cheap, too.

As far as I know, all S40 and V40 models in the UK came with fobs and locking remotely. It is only some basic spec models abroad that lack remote central locking.
Now, with regards to your car, the location of the lock alarm module depends on what year your car is. On earlier Phase 1 models from 1996 to mid/late 1999, without CEM, the lock alarm unit is located on the driver footwell on the right hand side. When the CEM was introduced sometime in mid or late 1999 (not exactly sure when), the lock alarm module was placed under the stereo. So, let us know what year your car is and if you have a CEM or not. With regards to getting a working fob, easiest solution is to get a lock alarm unit and a fob from the same car and install it on your car. It is plug and play and no need for any programming. As far as I know, Volvo is the only one who can program the fob to the car and to do so, they need a new fob that comes with a special code to be used for programming
