Service schedule

I spoke to Volvo UK, to try to obtain the official service schedule for my car. (It's a 2006 C70. The one with the complicated folding roof.)

I wanted to know precisely what the dealership is meant to be doing for the interim service for this car. Not much, according to the dealers. For example, not even oiling the door hinges or locks. I find that, quite frankly, really hard to believe. I was particularly concerned that the roof should receive any maintenance that's needed - none according to the dealer.

Anyway, what it comes down to is that Volvo won't tell me. Their customer service is actually worse than useless, as they just waste time.

I really like my C70, but I'm incredibly unimpressed with Volvo UK. I'll need to replace the car sooner or later, and Volvo have put me right off.

Anyway, does anyone know where I can get this info please?

I think the dealer's actually right. On the service sheets that came with my previous C70 there was no maintenance schedule for the roof.

However you can request and pay extra for them to do a roof-specific service, where they grease a few key points on the mechanism and clean and lubricate/condition the seals. And I mean pay extra: this will involve their hourly labour charges and their markup on an already rather expensive perfluoridated oil for the seals. The attached PDF shows exactly what bits they're supposed to cover.

There's actually nothing involved in the roof service that you couldn't do yourself. The same oil is (AFAIK still) available to the general public outside of the Volvo dealer network: ask for Dupont Krytox GPL105 at GBR Technology Ltd in Reading (0118 982 0567). I've still got half of the little bottle I bought 4 years ago, having done the seals on my C70's once or twice a year. For a seal cleaner, I've been advised to use neat car shampoo applied with a toothbrush, wiped off with a damp cloth and followed up with a good rub over with IPA.

Ideally though you'd need to wait for next Spring as the PDF specifies an ambient temperature of at least 20°C. Trust me, it's really not pleasant on the fingers in the sorts of temperatures we're getting now!

I find it weird that there's so little in the service. For example, they don't even service the door locks and hinges. So, when they sent me a list, I thought that's not very much. Especially for what they are charging.

Long gone are the days when servicing involved greasing and oiling every bearing or moving part on any car.

Modern manufacturing techniques and materials have done away with those needs.

I once managed to snap a drill when I was drilling out some worn hinges.
The broken drill bit was still acting as the hinge pin 5 years later when I sold the car.
