Default Volvo purchase issues

Hi guys my name is David and I am from south lanarkshire near lanark I have been trying to purchase a xc60 r design over the past few weeks and how hard do you think it could be

I thought since I was spending in excess of 20-25k that it would be best to go through the select program at a dealer for peace of mind. My first experience was a vehicle at just under 20k all went well until they gave me a video which flagged up mats missing six inch scratch on door and wrong speed rated tyres the spec also differed from dealer to autotrader. Being select i expected all to be resolved however told secondhand car and that's what it came with then it goes out like that. Took my deposit back

Same experience today mats missing and won't resolve it

Went to non volvo dealer car 9k one year old 24k offered 1k deposit pay balance first week in Dec wouldn't do deal never heard of anybody not wanting to sell car in fact salesman didn't believe manager was so stupid

Is this select program rubbish

Getting kind of frustrated now want one with good spec but perhaps all that's needed is a decent design lux nav with winter pack all the other extras are just things to go wrong

I would appreciate any pointers here also nobody seems to want to take anything off or offer anything to make a deal are times that tight

Amongst this Forum there are reports of good Volvo dealers, and ones to avoid.
Clelands have a good reputation with at least one long-time member.
My suggestion is to search out a used vehicle which has been sold and serviced by the SAME dealer from new. That way the service record is known within the dealership and the previous owner is 'known'. On this basis, it is more difficult to hide any adverse history. There was a case some time ago with an ex-hire car being sold through a Volvo dealer (not the original new seller) where previous accident damage was (almost) deliberately hidden from the purchaser. It got resolved in the end, but there was a degree of "don't know anything about this guv" when the used seller was challenged over evidence of accident damage being repaired.

That's good advice however in terms of the select program is it any good it seems to state that only volvo parts should be fitted and that it meets very high standards to comply but the mats for example clip into the floor and tyres are safety related

Where would I stand if a major fault like engine or auto gearbox failed under this one year guarantee do they stand there and refuse to repair and who do you complain to if company dumps you volvo or trading standards or are you stuffed basically

I can't comment on Selekt as I only ever buy new, but I know some reports are not too complimentary. I suggest you search the Forum. You need to read the terms & conditions, and specifically what the exclusions are.

If you are buying a used Volvo you will have the balance of the 3 yr manufacturers warranty, as long as it has been serviced correctly, i’d Insist on main dealer service record but doesn’t need to come from a Volvo dealer.

Forum member cars that get traded for new would be a good interception before the dealers add their huge margins.

I'm a mechanic to trade but getting old now and wanting a car that's fairly reliable I won't be doing many miles and the volvo was up there with the best bmw are still having issues with engines and it seems that merc have a similar problem although my son has said he would never buy another bmw my old merc a 2000 model is still going strong in the hands of my son and still looks ok it never dated i dont think

Sales staff are strange creatures and main dealers generally have lost that personal touch and if you do a search on reviews few get good reports but folk tend to review more when unhappy than when delighted that's human nature we all like to have a good moan and also sites like these generally are full of faults because that's where we turn to get advice when it's broke and not a true reflection of the standard of the car

As a young man I seldom worked on a broken volvo but they were bricks then and I wouldn't have owned one I can't remember them rusting to death either but they were horrible to drive

At the minute I need to reflect on where I need to be and how to get there so this is a good place to be for advice getting old brings with it disadvantages most of the folk I knew and garages I worked in are retired dead or closed down.

I appreciate the advice and I'm learning as I go just need to make sure I don't get a bad deal

Try a motor supermarket, usually one year old and just had first dealer service. Fixed price, no hassle, drive away. Search on line and most will now bring it to you to test from any of their national depots. But they will try to sell you extra cover etc..

I baught my selekt xc70 from Mills in Newcastle. How good the warranted is I'm afraid I don't know as I never had need of it.

Mats are an optional extra and mine came with the carpet, pristeen so I assume they were fitted by the previous owner, however a full set of Volvo rubber mats were £45 from my local dealer and we're fitted 2 days after getting the car home.

As part of the purchase deal I had a Volvo detachable tow bar fitted and a tempa spare to replace the gunk and compressor.

All in all a pleasant and painless experience with no issues within the warranty period. I have had a couple of sencors fail since which cost me £400 by the time all was fixed.

Paul.
