Default Knocking on start up..

Hi guys... looking for a few pointers as to diagnosing a problem thats appeared with my 2006 V50 this last month.
Its developed quite a heavy knocking on starting up...as it warms after a few minutes and on driving, it disappears. Its performance hasnt faltered at all, nor is there any slipping of the clutch.

I mention clutch because I have found out this week (while waiting for it to "develop" so I can find out what it is!) that the noise drops considerably, almost to nothing, when I dip the clutch. This obviously gives a big clue I imagine as to whats happening.

Am I looking at a potential clutch DMF failure in the development?

Or is it something else? ...if so, any ideas as to where to begin to diagnose? Appreciate any thoughts you may have...

The knocking sounds like dmf to me I had the same issue on my d5 no slip on the clutch but horrible knocking on tick over, dip the clutch or put a few revs on and it disappears it cost me £1750 on a d5 but I believe the 2.0d is a lot cheaper good luck

Cheers buddy...confirmed my worst fears!lol.

The issue now becomes- is it really worth spending that on a repair..as I guess its value when fixed would only be around £1800...? Such a shame as I love the car and will still get another Volvo...so much is good about the car, it will be hard to see it go for scrap or broken for bits, but hey ho...thats life eh?

Thanks again for the info!

I got a quote from a local Volvo specialist for a new clutch and DMF, which was around £8-900. They did say that the price of the parts seems to change quite regularly, but this should give you a rough idea!

Circa £900 for a clutch plate, flywheel and slave cylinder. You’ll get that done no problem. Get it fixed instead of splashing out in another car that might end up costing you more. Shop around a bit, you might be surprised.

Default Sometimes great things come out of the bad....

Thanks for your input to the above fellas...and to update you on developments...

I just couldnt cope with the thought of struggling on with this major fault and waiting for it to break proper....so looked around first at garages to do the fix..but then also to look at new cars, as mine also had other probs I needed to fix such as the aircon condensor needed replacing, an undetermined small oil leak, a front brake problem thats ongoing even after replacing disc and pads etc etc...
Sooooo...after hunting online last night I ended up this affy at a great Volvo dealership 40 miles away to look at a replacement Volvo... a 2012 V60.....but get this- it was only a bloody 2.4 diesel D5 !!!
Yes, you guessed the rest....one test drive and once I heard that beast of a growl and felt the sheer power of it I was hooked good and proper! LOL

So yes..I bought it..cant wait til I pick it up next Monday now. Driving my own V50 home made it feel like a right shed! hahha.

They did take my car in exchange though- but did of course diagnose the DMF failure. Interestingly he said they could fix that for between 700 and 800 quid mind! Not bad for a main dealer I thought. But tbh Im glad with the whole outcome and I am now going to be getting the car of my dreams! So..as I said above, sometimes marvellous things come out of what you first perceive to be a disaster eh!
