Hi Sierraman (not steve sorry),
You have misunderstood, I am not having a go at you mate, I am agreeing with you. I meant to say thanks Sierraman, not Steve.... whoops. My reference to credit crunch was in reply to Clan suggesting we should really all use main dealers. I am replying to and trying to have a constructive dialog with Clan if you read his last post, no offense meant to anyone, we are all entitled to our opinions. TRW or SMI rack if ordering from ACS etc
For future reference and so you don't end up in the predicament I've found myself in,
If ACS tell you that either a TRW or SMI steering rack will fit your volvo C70 / V70 / 850, insist on going for the right one. Look at the product ID plate on the nearside wheel well Check the 5th line of the plate for the last digit to the right of the divider to look for the correct steering gear code marker (thanks to Clan for original info) 5=SMI 4=TRW my code is H91N4MS5, so I have an SMI rack. Twisted Rubber sleeve on Steering Rack
Hi
How can i put photo's on here showing my steering rack?....Can anybody help? I have a twisted rubber sleeve on the rack on the passenger side which appears to be held in place by a cable tie. There is also a banging noise from the same side when steering left/right..... near full lock. The drivers side rubber sleeve looks perfect and isn't twisted and appears to have a clip instead of as cable tie. I don't have any screatching on full lock so i don't think that i need another power steering pump. Any idea's? |

im guessing he nipped the cable tie up before he finished winding the inner tie rod to the outer or when you had the tracking done they didnt slacken the gaitor resulting in it twisting.
i would request who ever responsible to replace it free of charge. on mine it has a spring clip on the outer side of the gaitor so they can loosen it when tracking adjustments are made Last edited by big radius; Sep 22nd, 2009 at 18:13. |

I have some form of clip on the drivers side but none on the passenger side. (The passenger side is the side that bangs on full lock and has the twisted gaitor + i can see a cable tie) So the twisted rubber sleeve is called a gaitor? What part are you saying should be replaced FOC ? |

well to be fair if the gaitor (ruber sleve) is not split then you may be able to twist it back to shape but if it is split or if it splits then it can let grit and dirt in and prematurely wear the seal in that end of the rack.
but as youve paid a fair bit of money for the work done you should not have to try and twist anything back in to place! and as for the pic of the adjuster on the tie rod it looks as if they have used a jack russel to undo/adjust instead of a spanner/wrench! |
