It is not mileage which kills volvos but time, (corrosion,) and abuse, (lack of maintenance). Or at least such used to be the case. I wonder now whether it will be the extrodinarily high cost of replacing electronic components which constantly fail and cannot be repaired or swapped out?

father has a 940 and 850 both have a over 300k miles and both drive fine.
the 850 is on its original exhaust and clutch. we had a d5 before going to the v40 and sold that with 135k miles on the clock and it felt like new. |

I think the documented issues for your car centre around auto-box, intercooler and injectors, all of which can be expensive in the worst case. There comes a point comes in ownership where you accept a minimum residual value and budget for wear and tear maintenance against the temptation of replacing the car. I've run three Volvos (740 2.3 carb; 940 2.3i; P1 V70 T5) to the 200k mark with only 1 proper breakdown, although all three vehicles did soak up funds in maintenance and reaching the point of cutting my losses was a tricky decision. |

I wonder if any D5's will ever get near the 500K+ regularly achieved by the Peugeot XUD range of diesel engines ~ I suspect not actually

Even relatively mundane cars can easily shrug off the first 100k miles these days. I've two friends, one with a late Nineties Rover, another early Noughties Focus, both well on the way to 200k miles last time I asked, and neither with any history of significant repair.
Arguably, as engineers with boundless computing power are able to refine their prediction of failure rates, the cheaper cars will last longer thanks to predicting & ironing out their weaknesses. Meanwhile the premium cars will continue to provide good reliability in the early years, but the engineers will be able to achieve the required reliability and design-life without resorting to brute force over-engineering , and hence the cars may actually not live as long as they used to. These comments are not meant to be Volvo-specific, I would add. |

I think the amount of mileage on the odometer doesn't really matter if the car has been looked after throughout its life!
I had a Jeep Cherokee a few years back, that had 409000 on the clock and everything worked perfectly until a numpty wrote it off, by running into the back of me! Volvos have a bit of a reputation for having strong engines that last a good while and rightly so. My previous two cars (both Volvos) had well over 200k on the clock, when other bits started wearing out, so I got rid.. I guess if you want a car for life, a Volvo wouldn't be a bad choice at all. The only thing that puts me off with modern cars (all modern cars), is all the electronic trickery just waiting to fail! Consiquently my new rule is, throw it away when it gets to 200k! |

And that's where the service and maintenance history comes into play, especially with the ME7 and all of the ancilliary components/ sensors.

My '57' plate V70 D5 SE Sport just changed to 138,000 miles as I pulled back on the drive last night. Hoping to get lot more out of it yet!!! Does have a hard life really being used for airport runs, school runs and some local taxi work aswell. However I do try to look after it and keep it nice, customers quite often comment they can't believe the mileage as it looks so tidy.
My other work vehicle is a VW Transporter Shuttle 130TDi on a 54 plate. Just gone straight through M.O.T and now council test with 302,000 miles on the clock. Strangely when I sell it next year got several people who definitely want to buy it!! |
