Default Clutch choice

Oh hai!

Took a friend to nottingham today to pick up an RX8 for his ole dear. On the way back i notice that doing high gear pulls where the turbo spools instantly almost, it was slipping the clutch by 500 ish revs.

What clutch choices are there out there?

Any perfomance ones that arent going to eventually start slipping?

Hit me up y0!

Cheers

Chris

You've got that terrible dual mass flywheel, but anyhow, here's a couple of ideas from turbobricks:

You can use the older (1991-1994) dog-dish flywheel with the M90.

The M90 + dual mass flywheel uses a 240mm clutch setup.
The M90 + dog-dish flywheel uses a 228mm clutch setup.

The M90 has 20 splines.
The M46, M47 and (?)

And there are two easy clutch options:

(All parts are interchangeable between the two options)

Option #1:
Standard 940TDi clutch setup. Good for ~400NM.
Clutch disc 940TDi, organic, 20 splines, 228mm, Sachs p/n: 1862 468 031
Pressure plate, stock, 228mm, Sachs p/n: 3082 204 033

Option #2:
Custom clutch setup. Good for a little over 450NM.
Clutch disc 850GLT, organic, 20 splines, 228mm, Sachs p/n: 1862 314 032
Pressure plate, strengthened/performance, 228mm, Sachs p/n: 3082 999 763

If you want even more clamping force, use the pressure plate I mentioned above together with one of the following clutches:

Clutch disc 850GLT, organic race, 20 splines, 228mm, Sachs p/n: 1864 999 996
(Will hold a little over 510NM)

Clutch disc 850GLT, sintered, 20 splines, 228mm, Sachs p/n: 1864 999 993
(Will hold a little over 580NM)

I've fitted a solid flywheel and diesel clutch to my car. It's got a nice light pedal and is much nicer to drive than the old dual mass one. You need to be a bit more delecate at slower speeds as it's a bit more direct than the rubber band flywheel one.
You have to fiddle about with the clutch arm by fitting a few washers or a spacer to the pivot. I also found the pedal itself a bit low which is probably similar on all M90 cars so I made an adjustable pushrod up for it.

Not sure how much extra power the diesel clutch will stand though. There is a lot of info on Turbobricks forum here.

I probably need a new clutch in my Sport (Steve Curtis's "der Aachener") so this is interesting. AFAIK TDI clutches stand a LOT of abuse in most B234F+Ts.

Thats interesting and a bit of a worry as I should have put a new one on my car but forgot to order one.
I would be surprised if they aren't available perhaps they made a mistake or the part numbers has been changed.

What plastic clip?

Do you mean the plastic thing that the pivot ball sits in? That's still available - Part number 9163851. £2.60

That clutch kit looks like a generic reman one which will probably slip after a little bit of abuse.

You want a genuine sachs kit, which you can either get from volvo at a stupid price or buy it in a sachs clutch box from a factors. However to get it even cheaper buy a LUK clutch kit and inside the box are genuine sachs bits.

The Sachs clutch will more than be able to handle your power aspirations.

Read this thread below where i list the part numbers you need for the conversion.

I've also since then with a friend made longer clutch pushrods to get the pedal feel i prefer.

You could also instead of buying a stock flywheel from the scrapyard, get a lightweight flywheel from TTV

I should have said it was the clutch master cylinder pushrod I made up. This lifts the pedal higher when it's at rest as it was a bit low compaired with the brake pedal.
Does the longer slave one mean you don't need to space out the clutch arm pivot ?
