rear brake pad replacement

Has anyone done a DIY rear pad replacement on the electronic handbrake D5 XC60. I'm a capable DIYer but what about the handbrake?

You need a special electronic tool that retracts the rear disc brake piston into the service position to allow you to fit the new pads.

If you do not want to pay dealer prices then Laser Tools make a suitable tool - see

It also resets the service light but its not cheap.

In the volvo brake pad box is a leaflet explaining how to change them without any tools except a set of torx drivers ...

Not sure on Volvos but, I did a mates A4 rear pads and it was as easy as replacing manually operated pads.
Although it did strengthen my opinion of the totally pointless nature of of an electronically, over complicated method of doing what a cable/rod did a perfectly good job of

That's good news - saves spending the best part of £160 on the special tool.
Must make sure I speak to Rufe when ordering new rear pads.

I have a comprehensive set of piston retraction tools - LH and RH and daptors which I have used on a Pug 207(?)

Am I right in assuming that I can retract the pistons manually without spending£133 from Amazon (cheapest I could find) for the bit of electronic kit?

Get the electrical connector plug (from a Scrappie) with some wire left on it, and just reverse the polarity to a 12v DC battery.

Yes i can confirm you can replace the rear pads without the need for any electronic wind back tool.

Basically you will need to remove the motor from the caliper and manually wind back the handbrake mechanism.

As mentioned previously full instructions are enclosed in the replacement (genuine volvo) pads.

I can also confirm no special tools required to change rear pads on my 2007 S80 D5. The genuine volvo pads have instructions and pictures how to do it you only need two spanners 13 and 15 mm and two torx 30 to remove electic motors + 40 to wind back piston with assistance of g clamp. should take no time at all. Although volvo supplied wrong size of shims in box so just used old ones after good clean!!
