ok gatos, thanks for your info. im familiar with programming ecu/keys so i think the customer is going to order a second hand one and go from there, i dont think $30 for 3 day subscription is too bad and can be passed on. ill let you all know how it goes.

Would hold back on the ECU failure first. My thoughts are if no scan tool can communicate then the ECU may well not be fully powered up. When the key is on engine not running have you got the engine managment light coming on during bulb check?

If not then look closley at all ECU power feeds, switched power feeds and all grounds. Check grounds under load ie when cranking. With key on check any 5v refrenced component MAF, CTS TPS to see if you have a 5v refrence voltage, if not ECU is not powering up.

ah ok. do you have a wiring diagram for the ecu?. ill hold off untill the new dice turns up aswell
