No one else seems to want to answer so I'll give it a try.

The AWD system relies on other systems. So, for example, if the ABS sytem was faulty, the AWD system would not work and would therefore be turned off(disconnected).

You most likely have a fault else where on a related system that is causing this problem.

You could do with codes being read, if you do get them read make sure you ask for them so you can post them up.

I've no idea at this stage what is wrong but what I can tell you is your Haldex system (4 wheel drive system) is reporting an error and as such the car has given you the yellow triangle and the system message. It will also mean it has stopped your 4 wheel drive part from working too.

Unfortunately you really do need the codes to find out what is wrong.

Did you get the actual code?

What code reader is being used? Some generic ones are pretty bad at actually pin pointing the problem on the XC90 for haldex codes.

The DEM is located at the end of the propshaft, there's no need to remove it, access to the DEM doesn't require removal of the proshaft. Must be the motor they plan to replace.

Here, check out this video, you can see the position of the DEM.
